Articles: My Thoughts | Essence of being a Telugu - Mr. Kenny Montana
| |
What exactly is being a Telugu person? Its definition far transcends the geographical, religious and societal boundaries and delves deep into the fibre of our lives. Did I lose you all? :). Well then here is my take on what it means (to me) to be a Telugu:
-- The festive feeling before Sankaranthi, Ugadi, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Deepavali. The smell of 'gobbemmalu', the taste of Ugadi pacchadi, the smell of crackers, the joy of meeting childhood friends outside my house.
-- Playing gully cricket in the bylanes with a 'cork' ball, playing marbles with friends, flying kites
-- Morning of Holi, going out on the streets with friends
-- Having chai/samosa at the college canteen
-- Bunking classes to see a morning show
-- Having a 2/3 chai (also called 'do by theen' in my favourite irani cafe)
-- Sipping filter coffee and listening to MS Subbulaksmi's Vishnu Sahasranamam on Vivid Bharathi at 6AM with a copy of Deccan Chronicle in hand.
-- Listening to 'Janaranjani' program (I guess I must be a decade behind on this. Not sure if they still have this program on the radio, leave alone people listening to the radio)
-- Seeing Hyderabad from the air as the flight descends on the Begumpet runway (always gets my heart rate up even after 14 years of staying abroad!)
-- Listening to the sounds on the street, from the auto honks to the vegetable vendors, to the recyling fellow ('Papaar Kaaithaaloo..Seesaal Dabbaloo'), the ice cream vendor and the flower guy ('Maaleloo..Mallepooloo')
-- Watching cricket at Lal Bahadur Stadium (Eastern Pavillion where the action usually is)
