It is true, definitely; the mass media can influence the mind of people. If this media telecasted real issues, it is well and good. What is happening is exactly in opposite. This letter refers to the Telugu T.V serials. Instead of empowering women, these serials are highlighting and encouraging the sufferings of women. Middle class families politics are being always telecasted with rich adore. Masochism is being encouraged among women. Instead of encouraging their progressive attitude and empowering them, what exactly happening is opposite. Her husband subjects even the earning wife to harassment. Yet, she never raises her opposition. In addition, this is shown like a noble cause in these serials. These serials are encouraging women to stick before TVs, ignoring the educative role of their children. The middle class women started thinking that their silent and tolerance only can solve problems when they exploited. No woman is watching the News and Doordarshan. They go away from TV to take food when the ‘News’ comes and come back when the serials begin. The serials playing a prominent role in capitalizing the ignorance of women and their genuine rights. Everywhere in the serials, there are sentiments and family politics. No serial runs without them. No serial shows their empowerment. The women instead of understanding the real issues perceive the same differently. They started misusing of Dowry Prohibition Act (1986) as the High Court of Andhra Pradesh has recently observed. This is resulted in the increase in the rate of divorce in the cities. Dynamism, education of women, rural life, rural women and their problems seldom shown by these serials. Everywhere there are family politics that too for property. Often daughter in law is targeted either positively or negatively. The daughter in laws masochistically enjoying being victimized. The TV watching mothers started thinking negatively about the future of their daughters because of these serials, as they started encouraging the attitude of submission that too unconditionally at her would be. No women watch the News. Few women read the newspapers, that too only to see the Muhurthas, dress designs and classifieds, but not editorials or news headlines. Instead of getting enlightenment, women are becoming so conservative in their outlook and middle class mothers and brothers are discouraging the empowerment of women because of these serials. Particularly, the situation in middle class Hyderabad is horrible against women. Women became habituated with this situation. Indian women are already facing discrimination at all fronts because they are with culturally stagnated mind. The rate of crime against women is increasing day by day. Instead of empowering them to face that injustice, these serials are diverting their attention towards masochism. In India, there is a serious issue going on that is Reservations to Women in the parliament. In India, women are treated as marginalized citizens; as legislators have failed to come to consensus in providing reservations to women in the legislature. They are marginalized citizens in the sense that they may not be allowed to exercise any autonomy in the decision-making process and to have any right over their bodies and enjoyment of their economic profits achieved, leave alone their participation in politics. However, women watching serials. Instead of reacting to that issue, they are silently watching serials and indulge in family politics. When the crime against women occurs, every body reads news but no one reacts. This male dominated society find a different to keep women unarmed and underpowered that is TV serials. I think these serials need to change their attitude towards women. Instead of showing the unconditional submission of women and the family politics, it is a national responsibility to prepare women to face any kind of eventuality in their life. Really, when this masochism is mixed with mass media, it acts like a powerful tool to keep some sections marginalized. Women have secured strong economic, socio–cultural and political footholds in certain countries. In such countries, we find various positive effects: women have succeeded in various fields; institutions function according to well-defined democratic norms; the levels of crime, violence in general and against women in particular, corruption and population growth rate are low to very low; decision-making is not concentrated in the hands of a few people; citizens actively participate in local self government; and the voice of women is listened to and respected at all levels from family level to nation. In these countries, women have begun to seriously alter the very nature of politics and have made enduring and substantial gains for themselves in every field. This explicitly shows that this system does not want women empowered. I sprightly ask the question to the serials’ makers, are these family politics, property issues and showing rich adore are real vehicles of empowerment of women? The introspection is needed among themselves. Is it not misusing the Constitutional Right of Right Freedom for capital gains? I request the ‘Times of India’ and other enlightened people to investigate the rate of crime and rate of divorce in the families of Andhra Pradesh in relation to these TV serials. These kinds of serials are pulling the clock back by empoisoning the minds of women. It happens when capitalists enter the mass media. It is only the government run Doordarshan use to telecast some worthy serials, but private channels. I invite your opinions.. your friendship also.
