Sir,
“Ignorance is bliss”, Rousseau says in 18th century. However, it is a crime in 21st century, particularly regarding AIDS. This ignorance can kill people and can make people murderers at the same time this ignorance can take away your life. If the citizens are ignorant of their national or social responsibilities, everywhere there will be anarchy.
The newspapers have been publishing the news about V. Sukuma. It is true that V.Sukuma who has inflicted with HIV+ may be with out her knowledge. Many Lambada men go to Poona, Bombay and other cities to work. Because of money they earned they try to enjoy all the cultural maladies of those cities. Because of this, the incident of HIV appeared among tribal societies. Indeed V.Sukuma has suffered a lot. The indifference of the society with HIV+ve persons can be tackled with mass media awareness programmes. Nevertheless, there a need of immediate help or assistance to this innocent tribal girl. At the same time, it is true the newspapers reported this incident to the public, but they would have taken the initiative to help Ms.V.Suguna who is suffering social ostracism. Her father and the villagers need to be educated if necessary subjected to the law of the land, then only these people realize what they did to an innocent. Merely just reporting will not be an end the social responsibility of the newspapers, the real responsibility starts from then. She can be offered an any kind of employment in those newspapers. Ironically, the NGOs are silent. There is news that MGM Hospital of Warangal and Osmania General Hospital rejected her to treat need to be taken very seriously. Her father and others who tried to murder her need to be prosecuted. Those doctors who have not treated Ms.V. Suguna need to be highlighted by the state government, as they failed to perform their duties. What the state government is doing, though there is plenty of news coverage about Ms. Suguna in the newspapers? It needs to take up the issue of ill-treatment by the society. At one time, the state government receives the Aid from Bill Gates, at the same time it sits hand folded when almost all the newspapers cover this incident. What a pathetic condition indeed. Every one is calm and indifferent of this innocent sufferer. The press, the government and the public are so indifferent towards this innocent girl, Ms. Suguna. Why the situation is like this by society towards HIV patients. After all her HIV status is an only an allegation. It is because of ignorance. The village property disputes and politics cannot be ignored. Ms. Sukuma incident may be one of the million issues in India, the press need to be aware and vigilant towards these kinds of incidents. The governments need to take this kind of issues very seriously. The total village needs to be penalized when there is a mass involvement. Judicial activism is required in this regard to prevent this kind of incidents in future. I request the lawyers of Andhra Pradesh to go for Public Interest Litigation.
