Hindu woman stands as a rock
- Mrs. sharmila Sanka

This article has been published in Arkansas Democrat Gazette newspaper in October 2004. This is one of my 10 articles on Hinduism. Americans do not know our culture and so this has been chosen to write upon. Role of a Woman in Hindu religion Hindu religion crowned the role of Woman as modesty walking on two legs of sacrifice and love. She is treated as the visible manifestation of God and she gives up her whole life to be a perfect woman and to the thought that she is a mother. Hindu religion regards woman as a matter of reverence and believes there is no chance for the welfare of the world without the woman. It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing alone. Manu Dharma Sastra is the ‘Science of Righteousness or Justice’ in Hinduism. It says, ‘Where women are respected, there the Gods delight; and where they are not, there all works and efforts come to a naught.’ There is no hope of rise for that family or country where the women live in sorrow.’ Women deserve respect for they never return injury. It is said, in the West woman is the Wife, in the East she is the Mother. Motherhood represents the highest expression of womanhood in Hindu religion. Why is woman a matter of high importance? Why is it said ‘a woman should not shed a tear drop in her house?’ It is because of her sacrifice, selfless love and sense of responsibility and that such a noble person should not be hurt. She remains faithful to her husband all her life and doesn’t give way to temptations towards others. Husband doesn't mean he 'has to bend' before her. She regards him as God. From dawn till dusk she strives for his welfare. She performs various religious rituals of prayers to ask God to bless her husband with longevity and happiness. Though she remains a responsible wife, she finds perfect completion of her life only after she becomes a mother. Husband and child are equally important to her. They are Breath and Heartbeat for her. Lacking any of the two, she is a live corpse. Vedas describe Hindu married woman thus- ‘Karyeshu Daasi, Karneshu Matri, Bhojyeshu Maata, Sayaneshu Rambha.’ It means Hindu wife pleasingly serves her husband at all times with no trace of ego or expectations. She is like a minister besides the king who stands as a key to her husband in decision-making. She is like a mother who serves him food and looks after him with unconditional love for him. A Hindu wife is like a nymph who gives ultimate pleasure to her husband by quenching his sensual desires. A Hindu mother bears the life of her child inside her not 9 months alone but her entire life, as long as she breathes on this earth. Before she becomes a mother, she devotes her life to her husband but once she is a mother, she gives up her life for her child. Her love is so selfless that her heart is filled at the fullness of the child’s stomach. She rests only at the sound of the peaceful breath of her child. Her child’s first steps are hers and the moment her child speaks, her matured language unknowingly turns into a child’s language. Hindu mother is a giver of life with a smile dancing on her lips and complete satisfaction in her eyes. She has perennial love as that of ocean. Hinduism also believes women are the torch-bearers of the nation. Even in the present day world, women are treated with respect and certain jobs and political roles are assigned to women alone as a matter of privilege in India. It is said in Valmiki Ramayan, ‘Jananee Janma Bhoomischa Swargaadapi Gareeyasi’ which means that the Mother and Motherland are sacred than Heaven. No separate God is needed to come down to earth to bless her child. Mother’s word is a blessing to the child which is a life long boon . So if the women are raised, then their children will be by their noble actions glorify the name of the country-then will culture, power and devotion awaken in the land. This is the reason why Vedas declared, ‘Maatru devo bhava.’-look upon the mother as God as she is the embodiment of forgivenss who sacrifices her life without a second thought and she is a selfless soul who loves and serves her children from their womb to tomb. Many faults can be seen in any role of a woman but as a mother one cannot see any. For this reason, Hindu children remain grateful to the Lord for letting them taste the true love and pray that she may never fail to receive it all her life. Hindu woman stands like a rock. Whether a fine image is carved out of it or even if she is amidst heat or rain, balance remains to be her life-breath.
