Articles: My Thoughts | The Story of the 'Saree' - Swapna Jandhyala
| |

This was a joke that I know long time back. Rajiv gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were driving in a car and there was a sudden break. Then
Sonia Gandhi: 'I am sorry'
Rajiv Gandhi: 'If you are saree, I am Lungi!'
Lolzz..
'Saree' stands out as the most unique and special attires of an Indian woman. It makes her COMPLETE, DISTINGUISHED AND PURE from ANY other woman in this world. It shows the feminine side of any woman, by totally dressing up a woman from top to bottom in a distinct style.
Saree origins are 5000 years old, still we see majority of Indian woman wearing them TODAY which is great to know. Even in pop culture, saree fashion is exploited widely.
Saree originally known as 'Chira' in sanskrit. From 5 yards to 9.5 yards tied loosely, folded and pleated, it could be turned into working dress or party-wear with manual skill.
Its interesting how different parts of india have their own styles of wearing a saree. In maharastra, women wear a saree tucked between the legs, this style was mainly adopted as they worked in fields back then. So, its still the 'MAHARASTRIAN' style today.
Bengali women wear it with the pallu falling over the shoulders which you all might have seen in the movie, 'DEVDAS', queens of those times, who were the incharge of their homes had the pallu to hold the keys for the treasures. And that is the 'BENGALI' style today.
In a Gujarathi style, sarees are worn with pallu towards the right side, just opposite to the south.
Southern part of india, womean wear it with pallu to the left shoulder. Being from south, I feel there is nothing special with southern style as this style I am seeing since my birth.
For me, the most interesting style would be bengali. And saree trends are changing day by day. Today, women wear them with tank tops.
When it comes to silk, there is a HUGE variety, like mysore silk, bengal silk and many others.
An Indian woman, with so much variety in her life, is so lucky to have born in India to wear and know about 'THE INDIAN SAREE', the tradition of which will continue from our kids to our grandkids. A saree thus is never outdated and is yet a fashion statement!
Oh my beautiful saree!
You help me cover my head from sun!
You solace me by wiping my tears!
You strengthen me to stand among the masses!
'It would be a loss to the whole world if the Indian woman should cease to wear her native costume. India is practically the only civilized country where one can see on living models how woman can and should dress'.
