USINPAC and U.S. Congress Express Shock for the tragedy in Asia

US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) expresses sympathy for the tragic death and loss of some 38,000 people in South and South East Asia caused by the massive sea surge due to an earthquake on December 26, 2004. India was hit especially hard by this disaster. Triggered by the strongest earthquake in 40 years that shook the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, the tidal surge struck the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India in the early hours of the morning on December 26, 2004 catching people unaware. Several other Members of the U.S. Congress also expressed their shock over the gargantuan disaster and conveyed their condolences. USINPAC will work closely with United States Members of Congress and the White House to expedite international emergency aid for disaster relief for the victims of the deadly tidal waves. Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Founder and Former Co-Chair of House Caucus on India and Indian Americans noted, 'A tragic disaster of such a large magnitude deserves our immediate attention and assistance. As human beings we have all been horrified by the loss of so many lives and we must do everything that is in our power to ensure that the victims of this tragedy receive the help that they so desperately need. Our hearts go out to those that lost loved ones, and we send our assurances that on this sad day, the international community is sharing in their grief.' Incoming Co-Chair of the House Caucus on India and Indian-Americans Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) remarked, 'My sincere and heartfelt condolences go to the thousands of victims and their families who suffered during this devastating and massive earthquake and killer tsunamis. The many nations affected should know that the US will help all it can. This will go down as one of the worst natural disasters in the annals of human history, but it will also bring out the good of humanity in coming together and dealing with the aftermath of such unspeakable tragedy.' Expressing his condolences Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-AS) Ranking Democrat of the House International Relations Committee's Subcommittee on Asia & the Pacific expressed his deep concern about this tragedy and noted that 'we will work with USINPAC to provide help to the disaster struck areas of India. I will also try to introduce a legislation to provide assistance to India in this time of great need. All possible help is needed to deal with a crisis of this proportion.' In the meantime, aid to the disaster struck areas is extremely important. There are several organizations that are collecting funds for aids.
