- Miss shobha cherukupalli
  Page: 1 of 1
Long ago there was a village called Naga Nagaram near to the forests. There used to be a snake residing there in the outskirts.Very poisonous and dangerous. It took lives of many people going that way.So people used to avoid the place where it lived. Once a saint came that way .People warned him against the snake and asked him to go some other way .They told him that the snake is very dangerous and asked him to avoid the place. The saint had powers and wanted to enlighten the snake against the sin.He went that way and found the snake there. He asked the snake not to harm innoscent people and asked the snake to reform itself and do some good rather than kill people. The snake with the influence of the saint reforms itself and promises the saint that it wont bite anybody in future and will live on herbs. From then on the snake starts living on herbs and stops biting people, trying to lead a peaceful life Poeple going on the way observe that the snake is no more biting.Enthusiastic people go and try to test the snake and then conclude that it no more bitespeople and there is something wrong with the snake. This news speards around the village and people from around the village come and gather and try to beat up the snake with rods.Even then the snake does not retort back .Observing this some children beat up the snake.Almost dead the snake somehow escapes and hides in its pit.It has no energy to even go and find food. One day the saint travels in the same village again. He comes to know about the plight of the snake andfeels sorry for the snake. He realises his mistake and feels bad about the powerful snake becoming so weak. He goes to its pit and calls the snake out.Weak and powerless ,the snake some how comes out and narrates him the story of its decline. Then the saint says that he only asked the snake not to bite and harm people but not to stop defending itself. And the snake should defend itself from harmful people. He says that he only asked the snake not to bite but not to stop hissing.'Hiss but not Bite' says the saint .He nurses the snake ,feeds it and makes it healthy as before and leaves the snake there. From then onwards whenever people try to harm the snake, it was hissing but does not bite. This is the story of the snake. But the Moral we learn from it is that,One should lead a peaceful life and should not harm others. That doesnt mean that one should not defend themselves. If you donot hiss, people will take you for granted and harm you and your plight will become like that of the snake. So Hiss but not Bite.
