Articles: My Thoughts | Cell-tunes & National songs - Ms. Sowmya V.B.
| |
One day, I was sitting in the class listening to the lecturer. He was seriously saying something which I can’t recollect now. All that I can remember is that I was in the first bench, busy talking with a friend beside me. He was having a question hour. All of a sudden we all began hearing the tune -
“ SAAREY JAHAN SE ACCHA…HINDUSTAN HAMARA….”
I am just an ordinary human being. I am not a great patriot. But then, I felt a sudden instinct to raise and stand erect. For the first second(I mean second-1/60th of a minute and not second-2nd ), I felt that I am about to raise. But, then I didn’t understand what to do. I experienced the uneasiness in my legs for their suffering owing to my indecisiveness. Ofcourse, the very next second, I realised I was in class and sat quietly looking intently at the lecturer. I understood now that it was his cell-phone ringing.
The first doubt what I got seeing it was that-“shouldn’t lecturers too switch their cells off atleast during the class?” anyways, keeping aside the doubts, I was a bit disturbed at the tune being used in the cell-phones. Not just cell phones, car back-up tune, Bike tunes –the tune is being heard everywhere. Some time back, much before this incident happened, I was talking to somebody about this sort of things. I questioned-“don’t think its not right to use Vandemataram tune like this?”
“if u use janagana mana then its wrong. Whats wrong with Vandemataram? I feel one can use it…” came the reply. But, if “janaganamana” is our national anthem, “vandemataram” too is a national song. Even “saarey jahan se accha”.
I don’t know if the school going children now are being taught in the books that one should stand erect till the national anthem concludes. But, we were taught so. And I am sure the generation before us too. Some people have an opinion that they are exhibiting their patriotism by using these tunes for their cell-phones or cars. But, I don’t think that is a right defence for what they do. Patriotism can be exhibited in many other ways. Ofcourse, one can’t resist asking a question seeing all this-“if u can hoist the Indian flag on your house, why not play the national songs?”
Oh, yes, you can play the national songs whenever, wherever but, not for whatever purpose. By the way, if u say I am speaking meaninglessly, Janaganamana is always played in the end. How far is it correct to use it for cell-tunes ?-to speak “meaningfully”.
These songs have a great history. They are not just songs. They are a source of inspiration. They are power. So, let us not use them thoughtlessly for whatever purpose we want to. Let us respect their legacy. I don’t know if I am write in my view or wrong. But, I hope this article encourages discussion in this regard.
