The Registrar-General and Census Commissioner of India, J.K.Banthia, expressed his concerns about the drop in Juvenile Sex Ratio was 'Serious and Growing Problem. Yes, it is a serious problem, the growing also. It will continue to grow as long as women in India live like this, with this indifference and lack of enlightenment. Deteriorating this sex ratio further will lead to serious consequences in the society.It is not that the census has brought out of the bag of a great secreat. It is an established fact that women is being discriminated and ill-treated in this Great Indian Culture. Almost all the urban areas including all capitals of both India and states are worst hit of this disaster. India should not wait till the next census to take a decision. By that time the situation could deteriorate from bad to worst. Now, after the outcome of the statistics all the governments both at Centre and States are on toes. But I believe only the legal remedies may not work in this direction. The increased prosperity has not ensured a better life for girls. It is the economic growth without distributive justice. Hence, the situation is like this. It remains like this if our economic scenario is like this. The rise of per capita income is not the correct indicator of social justice, particularly in case of women. The legal enforcements may yield very temporary resutls in this direction. But it is the empowerment of women that yields in future. Even on serious health problems during pregnancy, the issue of abortion is not within the hands of women. It will be decided by her in-laws. Her weak economic position due to the practice of patriarchical prejudices like practice of dowry system and lack of equal share in the inheritance of property, are the main causes for her demoralized state. This prolonged dependency of women on men, by all sorts, whoever they may be, resulted in indifference of women about their reproductive rights and sexuality. In 1901 the sex ratio was 972, in 1911 it was 965, in 1921 it was 955, in 1931 it was 950, in 1941 it was 945, in 1951 it was 946, in 1961 it was 941, in 1971 it was 930, in 1981 it was 935, in 1991 it was 929, in 2001 it was 933. Very disturbing trends indeed. Between 1991 to 2001 the sex ratio appears increased, but the juvenile sex ratio had fallen. Hence, there will be shortage of women soon in near future. Alas, what culture is this that eliminates women. We hail it a Great Indian Culture. Ours is the culture that eliminates women. It is once again proved. Women are supposed to be fifty percent in every population. But they are being killed before they are born. At the same time, they are ill-treated, marginalized and discriminated at all fronts, if they live. Apart from losing a huge women human resources in the economy, their contribution is neglected or ignored, they are killed before they were born.
