Articles: My Experience | A peep into Telangana - Ms. Sowmya V.B.
| |
I belong to none of the 3 regions of Andhra Pradesh specifically. I belong to all the three regions. I have been in Hyderabad for the past 5,6 years, in the so called Telangana region. But, it was only a few days back that I realised that I know nothing of the life in Telangana. Even now, my view is only that of an outsider.
Some days back, I was on a journey to the Temple town-Basara in Adilabad district. We went past several Telangaana towns like-medak, nizamabad etc. I felt life was so different compared to the life in Hyderabad. The areas looked a bit backward to me and a bit poor too. But, I dismissed the thought saying-Hyderabad is a city and capital. But, even if we think so, the towns like Tirupathi, Kurnool,Nellore etc were not so dull as these. One more thing I noticed was the almost entire absence of a water body! I looked all through my journey for the sight of a water body(from the window seat of course!. The towns had a kind of typical town air with them. I felt happy feeling it after a long time, reminding me of my childhood. But, somehow, I was unable to fit myself there! may be the dryness in the area made the difference. Ofcourse, the Raayalaseema region is also a bit dry. But, somehow, Telangaana is different. I can’t say why.
As we went passed several villages, I felt I understood some thing about Telangana life. Almost on every wall, there were quotes like-“water is valuable, let us preserve it”, “use water judiciously”, “water is a national wealth”, “neeruntEnE panneeru, lekunte kanneeru”etc etc. these are only the ones I can recollect after 2 months now. but, there were actually many such statements that exposed the scarcity in the region. I thought-if anything can be done to improve the situation. But, I couldn’t think of anything except interlinking of rivers-a concept good on paper and good to dream of, but hard to practice(for different reasons).
One more thing that I noticed was the presence of so many temples for veerabrahmendra swamy. Almost all these temples had one common feature-a statue of a half-naked man with a whip in one hand and with a sort of anger in his eyes. He had the string of skulls around his neck, similar to goddess Kali. There was something in his other hand too which I can’t remember. I wanted to know why so many temples were built in a similar way. Had I been in a car, I would have done so. But, alas! I was in a bus. So, I reasoned that may be it is the common architecture of telangana rural temples.
For the next few days after that trip, the word “water” kept ringing in my mind. I too saw what water problem is in my childhood though only for a very very short duration(a few months I think). But, I never saw a total absence of water for such a long stretch. Another aspect of water problem was realised when I was travelling through the outskirts of Hyderabad-Rangareddy districts. Specifically in the nadergul, Badangpet village areas. The quotes on the village walls here was about flouride problem. One such quotes that I remember is-“palle palle ko ninaadam-flouride ni paaradroludaam”. This, I believe must have been a problem in other neighbouring districts too. Nalgonda is a popular example that I know. Seeing places like mahaboobnagar, I felt the area is educationally and economically backward.
The geographics of the place, as far as I saw did not have much of fertile soil either. Absence of a perinnial river must have made the difference. True, there is Godavari at Basara. But, when I went, there was not much water in that location too.
For the first time, I experienced the unevenness in the distribution in land and water in different locales of the same state. Though I never directly faced it, now, it was before me. After all these, I got a doubt.
The demand for Telangana state is the most talked about issue these days. But, won’t it be difficult for the Telangana people then? It might be difficult for the Telangana state to lead a independent existence and it has to rely on neighbouring Andhra state for a lot of things again! Now that the maharastra Government is constructing many projects on Godavari river in the coming years and the state Govt not reponding, more areas will suffer scarcity and may go dry. Some of them will be Telangana too. so, I felt separate Telangana state might be difficult to live. But,ofcourse, I am looking at it only in this aspect. But, this is an aspect not to be over-looked. Upliftment of Telangana need not be the only reason for partition because upliftment can be done with sincere effort from everyone of Andhra Pradesh.
I don’t know what would be better- a separate Telangana or a United Andhra.
But, if it can solve the problems of people here, anything is better. If the movement is for other reasons, then, separate Telangana will be a nightmare to live in.
Hope this article promotes some discussion amongst the visitors of TeluguPeople.com on the various facets of Telangana issue.
