Anjana had place her child ,Anjaneya on a bed of grass and gone to fetch fruits for him. The child woke up hungry. He saw the rising sun and assumed it was a fruit. He rushed towards the sun, to eat it.
Rahu,who was riding on surya's chariot, saw the menacing Anjaneya and thought he was going to be attacked. He rushed to Indra for protection.
Indra hit the child wIth his thunderbolt breaking his lower jaw. Vayudeva was angered at the assault on his son. All the gods, led by Brahma, rushed to pacify him.
Brahma touched the unconscious child and he recovered. Said Brahma,'devas! This child is unique. The world will need his help. So let us all bless him'
Indra came forward to 'bless the child first. I broke his jaw, so may he be great and be known as HANUMAN or ONE with a broken jaw. Hereafter, no weapon can hurt him'.
Surya blessed him with his radiance and promised to make him unparalleled among scholars. Varuna blessed him with immunity from dangers arising out of water. Similarly, all the gods, Shiva, Yama, Kubera and Vishwakarma blessed him with immunity from all weapons.
Finally, Brahma said, 'Even the Brahmastra can not harm this child. He shall be immortal and invincible in battle. He will destroy his enemies and help his friends. He will have the ability to go anywhere and grow or diminish in size as per his wish.He will be revered in all three worlds.'
This is how Anjaneya came to be known as HANUMAN.
