Articles: My Thoughts | Chaotic Traffic in Hyderabad - Our Role - Mr. Rajman Soman
| |
In Hyderabad, the one single factor which can easily be taken as the most accurate gauge of the efficiency of administration is, without any doubt, the traffic situation. The traffic condition here is perhaps one of the worst in the country. Even though other factors, such as water supply, garbage clearance etc are also very important by themselves, they are not as consistently and continuously bad, as the traffic condition. The factors contributing towards this almost unbearable mess, are easy to understand. Some of these are :
a. Narrow and limited road space for the volume of traffic.
b. Shortage of traffic police; the in-efficiency and corruption of the existing force.
c. Un-serviceable traffic signals.
d. Improper planning of traffic flow.
e. Multiplicity and incompatibility of the vehicle types
f. Absence of efficient public transport system, other than the RTC.
While the Govt is responsible for almost all the above ills, the one factor that has not been mentioned above, but which is very critical, is the Commuter - Discipline. This is almost non-existent here. No amount of police-bashing, lamenting for the absence of good/wide roads and lack of efficient public transport system can help us, because even if we have all these, it will be of no use if we continue to be as in-disciplined as we are. We have to have better traffic-sense; in that, we have to be considerate to other traffic; our tolerance levels have to improve; we must have respect for the traffic signals; we should not resort to aggressive driving etc etc. These qualities are not acquired over-night.
Therefore, until our collective - evolution reaches higher levels, road - widening, improving traffic signalling etc. can only have limited value. The major problem lies inside us.
