It was an easy lift-off to the 'missile man' Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam when the nation chose its 12th President. Securing a little less than 90% of votes, Kalam proved himself the real 'blue' eyed boy of the ruling coalition, despite a clear indication that as many as 42 MPs having chosen to beat the laid track, and presumably voting in an 'invalid' manner. While the president-elect felt the need to clarify to his bitter critics who pooh-poohed him for his lack of political knowledge, the defeated but brave woman Captain Laxmi Sahgal, while congratulating the winner, re-addressed once again the issues concerning the nation. Conceding a defeat even before the results came in officially on July 18, 2002, Sahgal said that the occasion gave her an opportunity to 'address a wide section of the people regarding the vital issues facing the nation, especially the danger posed by the communal forces in the country in the wake of the Gujarat events'. Dr. Kalam vehemently opposed the notion that he is a political 'illiterate'. Of the votes cast by 4,785 MPs and MLAs, 174 were invalid. Dr. Kalam secured 4,152 with a vote value of 9,22,884 (89.58%), and Laxmi Sahgal secured 459 votes with a value of 1,07,366 (10.42%). The serious business of electing the President of the country had its own lighter moment too. One of the voters advised the missile man to cut his hair to suit the new post! Of course, the vote was declared 'invalid' obviously. Now that the inevitable has already happened, the question that is lingering on the bitter critics of the president-elect now is how critical will he be in the matters concerning the democratic affairs of the nation. Will he uphold the Constitutional principles even if it means opposing the actions of the government as his predecessor has proved amply on several occasions, or toe to the line of his sponsors?
