Dear friends, I avidly gone through the debate going on in TeluguPeople.com on the topic 'Is it a sin to take dowry' Let me tell my views. The most appropriate question could have been Is it all right to allow the dowry to dictate, who should marry to whom and its consequences on the married life . Dowry has a commercial angle--It is more prevalent in agrarian societies where there are wide disparities between people of the same caste in wealth and education The people from humble backgrounds who have come up in life due to their success in education are becoming the targets of people having more money on their side. They try to clinch a match between these potential bridegrooms with caste and education as their only qualifications and their daughters through dowry. So, as such, dowry is doing the balancing feat between the avarice bridegroom and the resourceful father in law or between the would be warring groups. But what you get out of such marriage is a bride with different educational background and value systems, who often feel as your rightful master and also as your innocent victim. What you consider the good and desirable before marriage, may finally turn out to be your bad luck. Hope this may not happen to all, but the chances are pretty good! In this commercial world inviting dowry is like inviting commerce into married life and as such, there will be things for sale, exchange and barter . One has to take all the roles of being available on sale, available for exchange of values and available for bartering the self-respect as the situation demand. Today, world is going towards equal opportunities and participation without gender bias. Let the relations be on equal terms and with care for human dignity. Ultimately, there is nothing better than working for some one, whom you love and having some one, who can love you .The feeling of sharedness and attending to responsibilities makes life more meaningful. I will tell one anecdote. The Yama ,the ultimate public relations officer, has the knack of attracting every single talent to his side by showing stars in their eyes. This makes them blind and loose their ability to differentiate between good and bad. Dowry is like that. Let we, not be mercenaries to this dowry system and let we live with dignity.
