Articles: My Thoughts | Having fun at other's expense? - Gopi Burugu

I am not supposed to work on my next project as I completed the one I was working on way ahead of time. So I sit here stare at my computer monitor, pretending to work, while try to eves drop on a telephone conversion the woman, at next cube is having with her husband, thank God! She is having some marital problems, if it weren’t for her problems and what not, I would have dozed off staring at the monitor getting kind of hypnotized or whatever they call or don’t call. Well, who the heck cares!
The conversation is getting very very interesting, she seems to have huge martial issues. Marriage issues are so cool, especially if you are not a participant. You having issues with your marriage? Bad! Others having issues with their marriage? Cool! It makes you feel good about you and your marriage!
I blame Graham Bell and everyone along those lines that was involved in making the telephones so sensitive to transmit your voice which is so low that the person sitting at next desk cannot hear it clearly. I can hear it in bits and Pieces, I have a problem here. I can’t hear some words that come out of her mouth, let alone the voice of the person at the other end of the line. On the other hand it helps me improve my CQ (creative quotient(?)) and imagination, given the limited access to an important conversation, I have a lot of guessing to do and a lot of broken links to link, I am guessing what the words are that are not audible and imagining what the other nut at the other end is saying. Believe me this whole process is very creative. It’s like watching a foreign movie with no subtitles. On that note, I recently watched a foreign movie twice, first without subtitles and later with subtitles. It felt like two different movies, I liked the first one better as the main character dies in the first version and the supporting character dies in the second one. First one is a comedy and the second one is a tragic science fiction.
Anyways as I am feeling happy about myself seeing (or hearing) someone having trouble with their marriage, slowly I come to realize I am not too happy about it, I am not even semi-happy, I am actually a little sad, me poor thing! I am sad! Oh God, I am sad! And now I am happy because I am sad for someone’s problems. See I am not a bad person I am a generous person, no wonder I am so concerned about her situation. I muster some courage and go to her to show my sympathy, but I am mortified to see her all smiles... happy go lucky girl! Apparently she was talking to her mom about how bad her job has gotten, and how tough to quit a job in this day and age. She had no marital problems or anything of that sort, OH NO! NOW I REMEMBER she is not EVEN MARRIED! Graham Bell, what have you done?! And yo Tony Blair, you suck big time! Tony Blair is not Tony Blair you would think that has a BBC accent, Tony Blair is our department Planning administrator that oversees our seating facilities.
