Articles: Short Stories | Money - Money - Money - Mrs. manjari

It was a nice evening with full moon shining in the sky. I just came from my computer classes and I saw a kind of glitter in my mother’s eyes and Dad too was looking a bit excited but thoughtful. Slowly I had my dinner and was just relaxing in my room. My bed room opened and my mum came and sat on my bed. “Saru, I want to discuss with you something. You are now 23 years old and me and Dad just came across a match accidentally. I went to Ganesh Temple and I met a lady there who came to me on her own and started chatting with me. She looked very educated and told me that she came from Germany and looking for a nice girl for her son who is a doctor. I took all her details. If you have no objection, I would like you to consider this proposal.” First I was taken aback, as I have been thinking of going abroad for further studies and long time back told my parents, unless I settle in a nice career, I will not think of marriage. But given the fact that my parents are getting old and my mum is not really keeping good health, I can understand their worry. But somehow, I was skeptical about marrying a guy whom I do not even know and who is born and brought up in a foreign country. After lot of persuasion, I agreed to see them. I think that was the first step which has drastically changed my life.
Parents looked very aristocratic and educated and that lady was talking to me as though she knows me for ages and then and there approved me and told my parents that they are going to call the boy. It all just happened in few weeks. The boy came and saw me and we just went out for a while and I could not gather much information about his life style and his value system or anything. He was posing as though he was brought up on a strict discipline and his mother is his everything etc. The engagement was done and the marriage took place. All my relatives and friends were really lifting me up saying that you have just got the jack pot. Such a rich and educated guy. You do not have do anything in life except enjoying the luxurious life style etc. I also was carried away by my dreams and imaginations.
The days and reality started showing me its true colors. My so called husband Sarvesh gets up in the morning and just says hello to me and goes to his clinic and comes back in the night and sits with his books all around. My Mother-in-law gets up and orders me to do the cleaning and cooking and other jobs and then dresses up and goes to a club and sometimes calls her friends home for playing cards and she is a typical hi-fi lady who drinks and yells at me and at her husband and at everyone. I can not go out and study further because she says that I have to attend to the household duties and take care of my husband, so that his career is not affected. I realized I got entangled in a puzzle which can never be solved. Slowly I came to know that my so called husband has so many relationships and number of girl friends outside and I am just a servant maid at home. He changes girls like changing shirts and in the western society, no one wants commitments and girls are just available. I felt shocked and could not give more shock to my parents. I was always talking to them nicely and telling that I am very happy and I got a great family and husband and so on.
One day gathering lot of strength I requested my husband to put me in the university for further studies. First of all he said “ask mum”. But what happened to him I do not know the very next day he said “Ya. My friends are also asking me what is your wife doing sitting at home. They are thinking that I married a village belly. It is better you join some course and take a up a career too, so that you will not count hours and minutes for me to reach home”. I was thanking God and joined Ms Computers and finished it with flying colours. I was offered a job with a high salary. Initially my mother in law was objecting but when my husband told her what my salary will be she agreed a bit reluctantly. I joined my job and one fine day I looked for an independent accommodation and moved in there and called up my mother in law and said “ You are my mother-in-law and mother to a son. But Never ever in life try to cheat young and aspiring girls like this. You are also after all a woman. You should know an young girl’s expectations and dreams in life. You have shattered them. Now, you, your riches and your son go to hell. I can lead my life alone. If you again try to go to India and try to cheat parents and girls like this, I will get my story advertised with Capital letters in all the News papers. First thing, you have no values in life. Second thing why do you want a girl with values to your son, who does not even know what is Indian culture? You have spoiled my life. Never every try to do this again. Now I am not a timid girl who will keep quite and bear all the nonsense going on in your house. No young girl just wants riches in marriage. She yarns for the love, care and affection from her husband and commitment.”. She kept quite for a while. Then slowly she said, “Sorry Sarita. I will try to change my son. Please come back. Don’t break the relationship” I said “What relationship? I have no relationship with anyone of you.”
Mother-in-law - what do you mean. Don’t be arrogant. If your parents come to know, they will commit suicide. We are multi millionaires. We will get lot of girls queued up if we try for another girl”
Sarita: What nonsense? My parents are aware of this. They are coming here tomorrow. If you try to still exploit us, the whole community here is behind me supporting me. Don’t think that your money will save you.
Mother-in-law – Shut up. I can take care of that.
That was the end of conversation. It is two years now I have risen to the level of Senior Manager in my company. I was conducting interviews. One young and beautiful girl came for the interview. Her eyes are tiresome and weary. I interviewed her and offered her the job and when I asked her about her family it was another shock for me.
Radhika: I got married 1 and half years back to Dr. Sarvesh. ……
Rest of the story I was not hearing as it is unbelievable another girl was trapped into that ditch again.
Then I thought “Oh! Money. You can do wonders but this is really pathetic that parents just run after money and foreign guys in spite of knowing that the security of the girl is not definite. “
Then I realized it is not just parents mistake. Reasoning power sometimes dies in everyone when they take sudden decisions without much enquiry and back ground search. This world is full of actors. We have to beware of it. Money can do wonderful miracles and drastic disasters. What we choose is our fate and luck. After all marriage is a lottery sometimes.
