15th of October 1931 will no longer will be an unfamiliar date in Indian history. Yes, the 15th of October was the day when great one of the greatest sons of mother India Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was incarnated in a small town of Rameswaram, TamilNadu. His father had to rent boats to pay his school fees. He studied at the Schwartz High School in Ramanathapuram. As a kid he loved to watch the seagulls, might be the gulls knew he is one who would study the phenomenon behind their flight and be an aeronautical engineer. He was a prodigy, who kept interest in Tamil poetry and music while he used to sell newspapers. He probably has dreamt; one day the world would see him on the front pages. He used to recite the Holy Quran and the Bhagawad Gita everyday. He might have dreamt one day he should protect the communal harmony of India. The dreamer of these oceanic frontiers is also one of India's frontiersmen in technology. A technology that not only fired Agnis, ignited Prithvis but also can green the barren lands, provide foods to the starving, and profit in world commerce. “A First World dream for a Third World Nation”. Dr. Kalam, who is India's best known scientist, and space frontiers who felt India should be nuclear power to show the world that no one can threat our freedom. He played a key role in the nuclear tests at Pokharan and in the Rajasthan desert; which made the terrorist countries still feel earth shaking under their feet. He was a master of what not, Dr Abdul Kalam was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc HonorIs Causa) by several universities. He is the recipient of several awards including National Design Award; Dr Biren Roy Space Award; Om Prakash Bhasin Award; National Nehru Award; Prof Y Nayudamma Memorial Gold Medal (1996); GM Modi Award for Science (1996); HK Firodia Award for Excellence in S&T (1996); Veer Savarkar Award (1998); and Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (1997). He has been awarded Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India, in 1997. He is the Vice President of Astronautical Society of India, Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, and an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers. Dr Abdul Kalam has been a strong advocate of self-reliance in defence technology. Never a political aspirant, he might never had dreamt is to become the President of world biggest democracy. This was the dream of one billion Indians which came true. 'Bharat Ratna' Dr. Abdul Kalam is known for simplicity and humbleness. That he is so modest about his achievements that at every felicitation ceremony he gives full credit for India's success to his colleagues. We salute your humbleness sir who has rejected to have a new suite for his oath ceremony. May be we shall always remember your great words.
