The protest against Bush: Policy or Posture?
An analysis of the recent protest of the left parties opposing the visit of George Bush to India reveals the implicit dichotomy in their stands and exposes the hypocrisy. Dialogue is quintessential to any democratic nation and India has a healthy tradition of “Samwad” to resolve contentious issues. ‘The argumentative Indian’ to use the popular phrase of Amarthya Sen, in fact, relishes dialogue for it is the only means to express our consent or dissent over issues. The left parties are making an attempt stifle dialogue amidst the din of the sloganeering “Go Back Bush”.
An attempt to understand the current anger and the vehemence of the left parties against America and their orchestrated opposition, paradoxically, exposes the politics of the left. Their opposition is just false posturing, an attempt to divert the public attention from their own ideological failure that ensued their being party to the central government.
This is not to suggest that America is a holy cow and we should not oppose American war policy. American war and Bush war crimes warrant unequivocal condemnation. Bush is singularly responsible for the turmoil in West Asia and is guilty of perpetrating unprecedented crimes on War prisoners of Iraq. However, expression of resentment over a particular issue should not blind us in keeping dialogue open over other issues of mutual interest. Especially in the present day context where the nations of the world are forging a bond of inter dependence. Most of the Indians in India and most of the Indians living in America are for strong bilateral relations between Indian and America.
