Why this practice?
Marriage is cultural. So also living together also by both bride and bridegroom and their families. What is here interesting to note here is, some body may oppose it if anyone said that the dowry deaths are result of this cultural corruption. But it’s a fact. It can be said so that the negotiations for dowry are part and parcel of wedding pact. If the wedding pact is violated, it could result in violence that is nothing but dowry harassment or even death.
According to NCRB (National Crime Research Bureau) dowry deaths registered a 4.4 per cent increase in 21st century. Uttar Pradesh accounted for 31.8 per cent increase following Bihar 15.5 increase.
At least three girls are burnt for dowry in Karnataka every day. From December 2002 to March 2.3, over 150 women were admitted to the burns ward in Victoria Hospital, Bangalore. In 2002, of the 632 women who sustained burns (80 per cent cases were dowry related), 446 died.
In Uttar Pradesh, 75 per cent of marital discord is directly attributable to dowry disputes.
Girls and their parents themselves encourage this practice of dowry. They don’t realize that even gifts like white goods, furniture etc are a form of dowry. This is because of growing consumerism is making the problem worse. Succumbing to demands simply encourage greed. The girl’s parents should then be prepared for further demands even after the marriage. So why not stay away from proposals involving any element of dowry.
In our national capital, this marriage is called as ‘Decent Marriage’, in which bride’s parents send goods in bayana (advance).
In Punjab, this type of marriage is called as ‘Maruti Marriage’, in which a Maruti Car is presented on each and every marriage. Is it not cultural?
“I am not for sale. If the boy asks for dowry, I call him an illiterate and shut the door on his face”…says Nikita Rao, a final year B.Sc student from Bangalore. How many of you can do it? How many of you can say it?
