Is it cultural? No doubt, it is. This refers to the article, ‘ Has corruption become a part of Indian DNA?’ On 18th May. Mr. Jayaprakash Narayan’s opinion that Indians are honest as people anywhere in the world is correct. Mr. Jayaprakash Narayan said that corruption is not cultural or genetic problem is however is debatable. What is the definition of culture? Culture is that complex whole that includes knowledge, art, beliefs, customs, traditions and other acquired by human beings as member of society. Hence everything that is acquired will ultimately will become part of culture. If at all there are any people who are not corrupted, as he stated basing on a magazine survey, are poor. Because they knew the value of the hard work and every rupee they earned. He again says that the corruption is ubiquitous in our national life. Here again, what is life? Not just living in case of human beings, but living qualitatively. If his opinion is correct, is the quality of life that is corrupted. He says, the institutions of state no longer promote honesty and curb the corruption. If it is correct, the marriage is also an institution, that is part of India, infected with dowry practice that is nothing but a form corruption. Can anybody see the marriage negotiations without negotiations of dowry in India? It’s just impossible. In fact, the practice of dowry got immunity from the societal questions. No body is questioning it. The people who are benefiting from corruption shall never notice it. As they will not notice, can never oppose it. It is true among most of the people are either directly or indirectly related to power, authority, status in any of the institution in India. But the opinion of Mr. Jyotirmaya Sharma about corruption is sounding. Yes, the corruption is the outcome of a melancholic temperament. This melancholy never allows the people who are part of any culture to criticise their own culture. Hence the corruption at all levels is perpetuating. It is true Indians revel the corruption, as when a bridegroom got selected as an officer in Income Tax department, or revenue Department or Customs Department or any other department related to earn money by means of corruption, the father in law will get maximum reputation and claims pride. It is true, Indians think life after death by looking into past than future. It is because of it they distribute trishuls instead of pens; think to break the religious structures; think to build temples instead of schools and hospitals. Yes, a small stray incident in a remote place can create squalor of communal frenzy. ‘Corruption is a disease of soul; it is a character flaw’ is simply fantastic. When I said the same in an Internet site, there was a hue and cry because I said that the corruption is at culture core. In India, the corruption is deeply rooted, and at the roots themselves the corruption should be eliminated first.
