It’s been a hard time over the past few years for “Ma Saraswati” to embrace vocal chords of today’s male singers. This write-up is just to share my thoughts on this subject and let her know that I am with her to discuss if she wants to. Listening to 'Cheppave Chirugaali' in Okkadu really gives me chills; perhaps for you too. That’s a wonderful tune! Well if you like it so much and you want to listen to it again, you better watch out…coz you are about to discover some undocumented Telugu from Udit Narayan!! The much-awaited film Johnny has some pathetic music score given by Ramana Gogula. As always is the case with his music, it’s still a brainteaser for listeners to identify Telugu in his music. I always wonder why he has to sing for his scores. I must say Telugu takes unexplainable form in his voice. Well, if you think I’m having hard time with these guys then perhaps you should check out much renowned R.P. Patnaik whose singing talent, by standards of one famous director who is enjoying fleeting limelight now, has surpassed the legendary Ghatasala. That probably must be the most intriguing, yet ghastly thing ever happened to Telugu music industry!! Lets just say that I’m happy Ghantasala isn’t here to experience this most obnoxious moment. If I were to describe Patnaik, I would say he redefined and eventually wiped out the words “melody” and “modulation” from a singer’s dictionary!! Now that these words are in the gutters, well…why not give it a shot you all software engineers (me too)? I kind of like his music and enunciation though! Never wished to write something like this…but after listening to Devi Sri’s 'Andamaina baammalu' (supposed to be bhaamalu), Udit Narayan’s 'aapagalava chikaatlu' (supposed to be cheekatlu), Gogula’s ever-riddle music tracks, and with Patnaik’s haunting monotonous songs…why wouldn’t I? I wonder why this is not a problem with upcoming female singers? They seem to be doing just fine with their melody and Telugu. Chitra…a native Malayali doesn’t let you feel that she is a foreigner at all. Isn’t she amazing? I always get awesomely delighted with her flawless pronunciation and striking voice. And Balu, if there is anyone whose divine and appealing voice didn’t grow old with age…then it’s just him!! If you were to call someone a legend, then these are THE right people…right in front of your eyes, loaded with tons of talent and skill. Some of today’s male singers undoubtedly are in a pursuit to bring westernization or bollywodization to their Telugu pronunciation. I guess they would be just as fine as their female counterparts if they let “Ma Saraswati” instead of Matchbox Twenty or Justin Timberlake to dance on their tongues. Their enunciation is good for some songs, but why don’t they realize that it’s not for all songs? Fortunately, there is talent flowing within these guys, but it would be more delightful if they keep our beautiful language in tact without redefining it and bring some melody to the songs. As quoted by Balu once, a melodious voice is a unique gift given by God only to some people and Rafi is undoubtedly the most valuable one among those. Keeping Rafi aside for a moment, I totally agree with him and I strongly believe that a good voice is a unique gift … not everyone with vocal chords & NRI suffix can sing. Ever since these singers started singing, it has always been my aphorism…”If they can sing, why can’t I?” I would be knocked for six if this doesn’t become an Adage over the time.
