Articles: My Experience | Nijam and the Police - Mrs. Anjali Desiraju

Recent gaa “Nijam” cinema choosanu. Forget about the second half – first half lo police corruption gurunchi baagaa choopinchaaru. Though it is not a new thing – we see this in almost all the telugu movies. Kaanee ee cinemaalo, the way he showed it especially when a common man is involved with the police – I liked it.
Earlier, when I was still a child , I used to think all this happens only in the cinema. Kaani recentgaa about 2yrs back, there was a theft in our house. We were away during the night. Podduna 8’0 clock ki we came back and saw that the lock was broken and somebody entered the house and took all the jewellery away(worth around 50k). We were not staying in the outskirts of Hyderbad where usually such things happen. Actually, we stay in the prime area of the Hyderabad but close to some slums. Policelu vachchaaru, antaa choosaaru, thief is not novice annaaru, finger prints teesukunnaaru, actually chaalaa mandi vachchaaru the entire day. What they said is - the day -when it happened was the last day of Dasara. Maa area lo koncham sandadigaa vuntundi. Ilaanti timelo the thief was checking the houses and spotted this which was locked and came back in the late hours. Since he was experienced, finished it without much noise. Adantaa ok. Appudu start ayyaayi maa kastalu. 1st day police maa chuttoo tirigaaru. Taruvata memu vaalla chuttoo tirigaamu – for may be a couple of months. Later, we believed we wont get it back so we forgot about it. Then after a few days one constable came to our house and said we got some jewellery, come to the station and check if it is yours. I was surprised at the efficiency of the police dept. We went to the police station. They told us how hard it was to investigate the case and how they could finally find out the thief and then catch him along with the jewellery. They said the thief sold some of them and showed me half of the jewellery and asked me to recognize that. They were mine. They said case book ayindi. Courtlo antaa dorikinattu choopinchaali – otherwise they won’t close the case (they have some targets, should close so many cases per year etc) – so give us some of your jewellery and we will show it to the court and will give you back all of it. So I gave them some jewellery which they said could not be recovered(FIRlo chain is lost ani vunte I gave them some other chain and they wrote this is the chain that has been recovered). And they said we spent too much money on the case and the dept wont reimburse all the money. So we paid them the money what they said they spent. Inkaa officerski, gold check chese vaadiki, constableski – those who said they were the real ones who did the investigation but the money what you gave to the officers would be distributed among them and we wont get all that we spent for the investigation, courtlo etc., and etc., Then we met a guy in the court , it seems he lost some silver items and so the police gave him some silver in the shape of the ball. To get it from the court he had to attend it once in 2 weeks or something and everytime he came there the size of the ball was decreasing. So finally he thought though he would be getting some silver it is not worth the amount he spent in travelling all the way to the court. So he stopped coming. Then we realized, the police gave me back gold worth Rs. 20k and in return we paid them an amount of Rs. 12-13k. So I lost 50k and got 7k in the process. Still can't undersand if I have to feel happy to have gotten 7k instead of nothing or should feel bad for the lost 43k. I even saw the thief. I don’t know how far it is true that only half the jewellery was found.
I understand that it is not only in the movies. Real life lo koodaa policelu caselu varaku raakunda life simple gaa gadichi pote, we are lucky and we can be peaceful. But suppose in real life – as they show in movies by fate or circumstance we are challenged by a goonda, or police – it is going to be really tough. Nijamgaa govt employees and even police need money if you want them to do something for you. Nothing gets done without giving them some money. If you refuse, they take the peace out of you.
One of my classmates in Intermediate had a fancy for the Police Dept. Even though he did B.Tech., he joined as SI. Everybody asked him B.Tech chesaavu SI gaa cheraaventi, you have a bright future outside ani. He said,
