During 1940 to1968, Swami Sivananda had written more than 400 letters to his devotees and out of these, the essence of a few selected letters are presented here for the sake of members of Telugu people around the world and build the shrine of devotion in one’s own hearts. (1). Bhakti is supreme love of God. It is the Kohinoor in the crown of devotees. It blossoms afterwards into Gnana. (2). There is no book in this world, which is so thrilling and illuminating as the Upanishads. They will help you to reach the first stage of Gnana. It leads to immortality or God realization. (3). Annihilate the little “I” Vāsanas, and Sankalpās. The Upanishads teach the philosophy of absolute unity. (4). Without the grace of Mother Tripurasundari, you cannot have progress in the spiritual path. Without Shakti, you cannot do any thing. (5). Feel “I am the immortal self or Ātmā”. Again and again, repeat mentally this formula. (6). Equip yourself with the four means - Hear Sruthis, Reflect, Meditate and Realize. (7). Brahmacharya is the basis for attaining immortality. Observe Brahmacharya and become Jivan-Muktha in this very birth. Enjoy peace of solitude. Meditate in silence. (8). Desires will become extinct with the dawn of discrimination between real and unreal. (9). May your heart be filled with Devotion. (10). Constant studies of the lives of saints will enable you to lead a saintly life. You will imbibe their noble qualities. (11). Repetition of Sthothras & Hymns will elevate. (12). You are not the perishable body; In essence you are this Ātmā. (13). Give up the delusion of Agency, Ownership of objects and differentiation of “That Man” or “This Man”, “I”, “You” & “He “. You will soon attain Gnana. (14). Victory over the mind is certainly victory over Death. Become a hero. Conquer the formidable foe, this turbulent mind. (15). Srimadbhagwadgita is the cream of the Vedas. It is the quintessence of the Upanishads. Dive deep in this ocean of Gita; bring out the most precious pearls of Knowledge to attain immortality. (16). Samaadhi is the super-conscious state. The state of Samaadhi is beyond description. (17). Satyam or truth is the seed; Brahmacharya or Celibacy is the root; Meditation is the shower; Shanti or peace is the flower; Moksha or Emancipation is the fruit. (18). Vedanta is no creed, no ceremony or form of worship. It boldly proclaims with emphasis that you are immortal or all-pervading soul or Brahman essence. (19). Don’t try to drive away the unimportant and irrelevant thoughts. Fill the mind with the divine thoughts. They will gradually vanish. (20). Mahabharata is said to be the Fifth Veda; it contains the essence of all scriptures. If you cannot find it here, you cannot find it anywhere else. (21). Stick to Dharma. Be Truthful and Righteous. This is the message of the Mahabharata. (22). Lord Krishna was the Poorna Avatāra with sixteen Kalās. Every word of His teachings and every act of His was full of sublime object lessons of momentous import to Humanity. (23). There is a mysterious power in prayer. Prayers can work wonders; it can move mountains and it should come from the bottom of your heart with feelings. (24). Rāmāyanā is the most ancient and glorious epic in the world. It contains the highest ideals of Hindu culture and civilization. (25). Virtue abides where there is truth. Vice abides where there is greed and Lord abides where there is devotion. Therefore cultivate virtue, destroy greed and develop devotion. (26). Real religion is realization of ātmā. Real religion is one. It teaches us to live in God and attain immortality. (27). Think carefully; decide correctly; act faithfully; speak truthfully; live honestly; work diligently; talk gently; behave properly; you are bound to succeed in any walk of life. (28). Lead a pure virtuous life. Devote your whole being for the pursuit of Truth, attainment of wisdom and union or yoga with the Absolute Brahman. (29). Eat sparingly, Breathe deeply, Talk kindly; Work energetically; Think usefully; Act righteously; Apply tenaciously; Behave politely; Pray whole-heartedly. (30). Hear the Divine whisper in silence; Realise the power of faith; Feel God’s sustaining grace; Build the shrine of devotion in your heart; Enter the silence. (31). The light of saintliness is universal love. The beginning of saintliness is killing of egoism. The road to saintliness is regular meditation. (32). To be childlike is good; but to be childish is not good. To be devotional is good but to be emotional is not good. To have a strong will is good, but to be self-willed is not good. To stick to one’s ideal is good, but to be obstinate is not good. (33). Endure courageously; Preserve patiently; Concentrate single-mindedly; Meditate seriously; Realise quickly; Become a spiritual hero full of physical, mental and spiritual strength.
