THE GREATNESS OF THE GITA
Veda Vyasa , after describing the Gita in the Mahabharata , said in the end :-
Geeta sageeta karthavya kimanaih saastra vistaraih I
Ya swayam Padmanabhasya Mukha Padmadvinih strutah II
The Gita should be carefully studied and its meaning and idea should be gathered and held in the mind It emanated from the lotus-like lips of Bhagavan Vishnu Himself , from whose navel sprung the lotus. All men, irrespective of varna and asrama, the right to study the Gita ;the only qualifications needed are faith and reverence ,for it is God’s injunction to propagate the Gita only among HIS devotees . He further described its glory at the end of the Gita .
vide chapter VIII ,verses 68th to 71st & 46th verse.
68th Verse :
Ya imam paramam guhyam madbhakthevabhidhasyathi I
Bhathim mayi param kruthva maamevaishyathyasamsayah II
He who, having shown the highest love to Me , shall impart this most secret teaching of Mine., to my devotees , shall attain Me; there is no doubt about it .
69th verse;
Na cha thasmanmanushyeshu kaschinme priyakrutthamaha I
Bhavitha na cha me thasmaadanyah priyatharo bhuvi II
Among men there is none who does Me a more loving service than he; nor shall anyone e dearer to Me than he on this earth.
70th verse:
Adhyeshyathe cha ya imam dahrmam samvaadamaavayoh I
Jgnana yajgnena thenaahamishtah syaamithi me mathihi II
And he who shall study this sacred dialogue of ours , by him shall I be worshiped through the sacrifice of wisdom .Such is My mind .
71st verse :
Sraddha vaan anasuyasya srunuyadapi yo narah I
Sopi mukthah subham llokaan prapnuyath punya karmanam II
The man who listens to it full of faith and in an uncarping spirit , freed from evil,even he shall gain the happy worlds of the virtuous.
46th verse :
Yatah pravruttih bhoothaanam yena sarva midam thatham I
Svakarmana thamayarchya siddhim vindathi maanavaha II
He from whom is the emanation of all beings , by whom all this is pervaded ,- by worshipping Him through the performance of his own duty , man attains perfection .
Sankhya yoga , chapter II 8th verse:
Na hi prapaschaami mama apanudhyad
Yachchokam uchoshanam indriyaanam
For even on obtaining undisputed sovereignty and an affluent kingdom on this earth and lordship over the gods, I do not see any means that can drive away the grief which is drying up my senses .
Chapter II 9th verse
Evamukthva hrusheekesa paranthapa I
Na yothsya ithi govindam ukthva thooshneem baboovaha II
O king, having thus spoken to Sri Krishna , Arjuna again, said to Him ,”I will not fight,” and became silent.
Chapter II 48th verse
Yogastthah kuru karmaani sangam thyakthva dhananjaya I
Siddha asidhayoh samo bhoothva samathvam yoga uchchathe II
Perform action, O Dhananjaya, being steadfast in Yoga, abandoning attachment and balanced in success and failure. Evenness of mind is called Yoga.
Chapter V , 6th verse
Sanyas asthu mahabaho duhkham apthumayogathah I
Yogayuktho munirbrahma na chirenaadhigachchathi II
But renunciation , O mighty-armed , is hard to attain without Yoga; the Yoga-harmonised Muni quickly goes to Brahmin
Lord described the practice of Sankhya yoga as (ref the 6th verse above)and disinterested . Karmayoga ,being easier of practice , the Lord exhorted Arjuna , every now and then , to practise it, together with constant meditation on him.
