The Divine Song ( Tiruppavai)

1) Margazhi thingal...
In this celebrated Maragahi full-moon day,
desirous to bathe, come,
well-jewelled ones of the fertile Ayapadi,
fortune's darlings, spear handed Nandagopan's son,
beauteous eyed Yasoda young lion
with an azure body and rosy lotus-eyes,
and a face like Sun, Moon, Narayanan himself
will grant our desires, as the world will
praise, bathe ..oh.Pavai.!!
2) Vaiyathu Vazvirkal...
Living beings of this world
hear our rites to perform our vow
singing to the feet of the Lord sleeping
in the ocean of milk, taking not ghee nor milk
bathing in the early dawn
painting not the eye with collyrium
decking not our tresses with flowers
doing not what our ancestors didn't
speaking not evil words,
giving gifts and alms to sages and saints
to content we will rejoice, oh..Pavai..!!
3) Ongi..
Singing the name of the Supreme,
who expanding measured the worlds,
as the object of our vow , should we
bathe without ill effects thrice a month
will it rain, amdist the tall and rich paddy stalks,
the fish will leap in the beautiful water
lillies the bees will sleep,
the fat udders of the benevolent big cows,
when drawn by the unwary milker will fill the vessels,
forever lasting prosperity, oh Pavai...!!
4) Azhi Mazhi kanna..
majestic like ocean,
rain cloud do not with hold any in your qualities,
enter the deep mid-ocean, drawing water
go up the sky with a roar,
becoming dark like the Primeval Lord,
lightening like the discuss in the hand of the Lord
with eminent and lovely shoulders ,
and lotus in the navel,
thundering like his panchajanyam , like the arrows
the the Saringabow rain in this world
for prosperity without delay
and happily we will take the Margazhi bath..oh.Pavai..!!
5) MAyanai..
Show to the Mayan, the North Mathura's son
the pure and deep yamuna's ferry's Lord
the beacon light of yadava caste,
the Damodara who illumined the mother's womb
we, becoming pure, offer good flowers and bow
sing His names and meditate, the sins of the past
and future will disappear like cotton in the fire..oh Pavai..!!
6)Pullumsilambinakan..
Birds are chattering ,from the temple of Garuda's chief,
the sounds of the white conch do you not hear, young girl..
Wake up, the Lord , who sucked the poisonous milk, took life out of demoness breast who kicked the deceitful cart into pieces,
the seed of this universe reclining ,on the serpent
Lord in milky ocean, enthroned in their hearts
the Rishis and yogis arising slowly re saying :Hari, Hari'
pleasing to the mind.., oh, Pavai..!!
7)Keechu Keechu..
The chatter of the larks from all directions,
don't you hear stupid girl , the chiminh of ' Kasu and pirappu'
and the curd-churning sound by the gopikas with perfumed tresses,
don;t you hear.., leader of women, are you lying in the bed
while we sing of Kesavan, incarnation of Narayana,
radiant one, open the door, oh Pavai..!!
8) Keezhavanam..
Eastern sky has lightened; the buffaloes
have entered the little garden to graze the dew filled grass,
preventing the other girls from going ahead ,
we have come to call you,
the beloved of Krishana, wake up..!
sing his names for earning the desired objects,
if, to the Lord who tore the mouth of demon-horse,
who killed the wrestles in dual,
we go prostrate, He, enquiring our wants, taking pity,
will bestow his grace on us oh.. Pavai..!!
9)Thoomani Madathuch..
In the pure gem-studded mansion,
with lamps burning all around,
and incense emitting fragrance,
sleeping on the soft bed , you uncle's daughter
open the gem-studded door's latch, aunty
will you not wake her up?
Is your daughter dumb or deaf or has swooned
or is prisoner to great sorrow
or is under the sorcerer's spell,
Mayan, Madavan, Vaikuntan and other name
we are singing oh.. Pavai..
10) Notru chuvarkam..
oh, mistress, enjoying the bliss out of the vow,
though not opening the door, will you not answer,
Narayanan, wearing the fragrant tulasi on his head worshipped
by us will grant our needs in his magnificence,
did Kumbakaran , who became a prey to Yama in the past
defeated by you, surrender his slumber to you, Lazy girl..
precious like jewel , waking up, open the door oh..Pavai..!!
