LEADERSHIP QUALITIES –ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY
1.The leader’s qualities basically inherent and necessary to get trained too. At any level these are a must. A king or any equivalent status in the government areas, it is always rare to find a true leader. If we consider first a leader, next is capable of taking responsibility and to lead a group of people. Let us consider the king.
2.Kingship and the responsibility:
In the happiness of his subjects lies the king’s happiness in their welfare and his welfare. Only a just King commands the loyalty of the people. He shall not consider as good only that which pleases him but treat as beneficial to him whatever leases his subjects (Praja Shkhe sukham rajne prajanam cha hite hitam, na tam priyam hitam priyam rajne prajanam tu priyam hitam), wrote Kautilya in his Ardha sastra ,Tulsidas in Rama charita manasa also wrote that a king whose rein brings suffering to his beloved subjects assuredly merits hell. In the Bruhadaranyaka Upanishad states that a true leader leads from darkness to light, from the unreal to real, and from the death to immortality. These wrings are as old as of a period around 1200 BC..
3.Exemplary code of conduct:
The king as a leader was worshiped as an incarnation of God in earlier times. He was supposed to protect his subjects from all dangers and punish the guilty even at the cost of sacrificing his own life. His personal character and conduct were not only supposed to be beyond doubt but used to set an example for others to follow. See the examples of Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Bharat, Raja Janak, Yudhistir, Shibi, Aarishchandra and hundreds of others all noted in the annals of our glittering history. What so ever the leader does, it is emulated by others; what ever standards he sets, they are followed by the rest. Let us contemplate the degradation in terns of qualities and conduct of our contemporary leadership and taking a cue from our valuable ancient scriptures, decide for the betterment of our future.
4.Role of a leader:
According to Shukranti, a text on the craft of management developed around 400 A.D, a king has to play the role of seven persons, viz, that of a father, mother, teacher, brother, friend, kubera, and Yama. Like a father, he should encourage nurturing of good values and good qualities in his subordinates and be as forgiving like a mother. According to the Ardhasasthra by Kahtilya .Rakshana, Paalana, and Yogakshema are to be taken care of. The KING should also behave like a Rajarshi.
5.Qualities of a leader
A king is one who has the highest qualities of leadership. Intellect, Energy, and personal abilities. He should have control on the senses and mind, forgiveness, righteousness. Patience, truthfulness, courage and punishment to the guilty are the qualities of a just King. The king should be industrious and like mind towards all beings. Leadership is defined as a knack, character, charishma, persuasive ability,
