A pack of cards being handy, someone selects a cad and without revealing it, writes the name on a small piece of paper.
A second spectator is asked to write on another slip of paper the name of a film star. The third spectator writes the name of any town, the fourth, he name of a flower; several people in fact can be invited to write similar names on other slips.
These are folded into four and dropped into the performer’s cupped hands one by one.
The folded billets are now thoroughly mixed up, and one is eventually removed, whilst the others are dropped on to a plate. Without opening the billet the performer holds it to his forehead and immediately tells the audience what is written on it. The person who wrote it is asked to verify that this information is correct. This billet is screwed up and put aside. Another is taken, and again the performer reveals the contents, yet without opening it.
Once more the performer is correct, thus demonstrating he apparently possesses telepathic powers.
So it goes on., until all the billets have been dealt with. They can of course be examined at the conclusion of the trick, they will be found to be quite ordinary.
Method: All that is needed to present this trick is the ability to force a card, the rest is purely acting.
Firstly, have your cards, together with pencil and paper .You can borrow the later if you so desire: merely fold the paper and tear off the billets to a convenient size, about 2 and1/2 in X 1in. is ideal. Have a plate or cup handy to act as a receptacle for the folded billets. Do not tell your audience what to expect, but begin by forcing a card. This must be done so that the spectator does not realize the card is already known to you.
The selector is told secretly to write the same name of card on his slip of paper.
You can, if you like, have another spectator cut off any number of cards and write the number he has cut on his slip- this gives you an adequate excuse to use the cards in the
effect, but, as if to make it more varied, have the people write such things as flowers, , towns, colors, etc , on their slips.
Do not have too many, six is about right.
Now instruct them all to fold their slips in halves and halves again so that the writing is hidden, then, commencing with the first spectator (he man who selected the card), they are all dropped into your cupped hands. Here there is a secret move. As soon as the first billet is dropped in your hands, clip it between two fingers and in this way keep control of it whilst all the others are mixed around.
Holding your hands still cupped have someone reach in and extract any billet. It will be easy to ensure that he does not get the “card” billet. As soon as this is done, drop all others billets into the dish, releasing the ‘card’ billet last. Note where it is in the dish and keep track of it all the while.
The spectator now hands you his selected folded billet, which you take, and holding it to your forehead in an attitude of concentration, you divine its contents. You pretend that on it is written the name of a card, apparently after some difficulty, announce it (the forced card)
It will of course be verified by the person who wrote it. But as if to make sure yourself you open the slip and you read it again pretending to call off the card. Do not let any one see what is actually written on it and in this instant assimilate what actually is written on it; we will assume it is a town, say, Bradford. Screw up the paper and place it aside. Pick out another billet and hold it to your forehead; this time you pretend to divine that on it is written the name of a town (Bradford) The writer will verify this is the town he thought of.
You open it out and confirm that it is indeed the town. Glimpse once more the information on this slip and then screw up and put aside.
Thus you are one ahead all the time.
Continue this procedure until all the slips are dealt with, and all the information has been ‘divined’ by you, and has been ascertained as correct. The last billet to be ‘read’ is of course the card billet – the one you have kept track of.
The billets themselves can be examined.
Providing that your acting and presentation has been well put over, this feat will be one of the most talked about after your performance.
Note Individuals should if are keen should study well. Understand and try if you want. All is clear. No comments are accepted for your own good if want to try it.
