To Vote or Not to Vote - Babu Holds the Key

Hyderabad: With the Telugu Desam supreme Chandra Babu Naidu deciding to remain “undecided” over the censure motion which is slated for voting in the Lok Sabha tomorrow (April 30, 2002), political pundits have been having a field day predicting as to what is in store in the Lower House of Parliament in Delhi. Even by Monday evening, few hours before the debate begins in the Lower House, there was a clear evasion of a clear stand of the Telugu Desam Party. It is believed that many MPs have been trying to prevail upon the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu “not to leave the issues to the winds” as, according to them, the party’s stand supporting the motion could not, however, destabilize the Union government. Although Chandra Babu Naidu has not made his mind known to anyone so far, his discussions with the party leaders the whole day on Sunday, did reveal his stand! When he held extensive deliberations with his party colleagues, he made it clear, with eloquence, that the party should first “hear” the Prime Minister on the party’s demand to let Modi go. If the Prime Minister insists to extend what could be interpreted as “unqualified support” to Modi’s actions, then it is a clear signal to the TDP MPs that they must vote in favour of the censure motion. According to the political observers there are only three ways before Babu. · To Abstain · To Vote in favour of the Motion · To Oppose the Motion The first option is seen more as a convenient strategy, for, it will continue to give TDP the stature of being a trusted ally close to the heart of the BJP. Such an action will be seen by BJP as a gesture of continued friendship. But the opponents will dub such an action as “fence sitting”, which Chandra Babu cannot afford now. If the party adopts the second option of voting in favour of the censure motion, it will be credited with standing upright for the cause of secularism, even at the cost of losing a comfortable bargain at center. And the third option will guarantee its stature in the eyes of the Vajpayee government but will prove costly back home because it would open the flood gates for a volley of criticism for its being anti-Muslim. Whatever is the decision of the Telugu Desam Party over the removal of Modi, it is sure going to turn a new leaf in the relationship between the Bharateeya Janata Party at the center and the Telugu Desam Party back home. While the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is reported to be anxious getting an unstinted support from all the NDA supporters on Tuesday, the Opposition is pinning its hopes on Telugu Desam which has been putting a brave face on secularism. Although there has been a reported element of disenchantment within the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party with regard to the choice of obvious action, it is unlikely that any of the members adapt any strategy that displeases their leader.
