Act Now. Quit Smoking!
- Snigdha Reddy

Not very long did the Government pass a law that smoking was prohibited in public places. Nevertheless we get to see so many caring a damn & doing what they want to do. Little do they realize that they are actually digging their own grave. They drown themselves in the pleasure of inhaling nicotine conveniently forgetting the fact that they are helping their lungs develop holes in them. Last week I had gone to visit an ailing friend in the hospital. She was admitted into the I.C.U. In the same ward I found a Man around 60 yrs of age. He seemed too weak & moaning to himself. Before leaving the ward, I just went near to his bed. The moment he saw me, a faint smile appeared on his face. His facial expressions immediately changed & he seemed too happy to have me beside him. He evidently missed the company of his loved ones at that moment. In a very feeble voice , he told me that he was suffering from lung cancer for the last 3 months. Chemotherapy & medicines were of no use as the cancer was detected at an advanced stage. He went on to tell me that he was waiting for his son to arrive who was working in the U.S. He said that he regretted not being able to play with his grand-children, not being able to enjoy his daughter-in-law’s delicacies, not being in the company of his otherwise healthy retired colleagues & mostly regretted his bad habit of smoking which did him no good but failed his lungs & put him on his death bed at a time when he had to enjoy his old age. All that I could do was place my palm in his as a gesture of consolation. There was immense pain & remorse in his eyes. I knew he terribly regretted his condition. Living had become painful & death seemed to be his only solace which came to him only 2 days later (this I came to know when I went to pay a second visit to my friend). Why do we have to do things which would only force us to regret at a later stage in life. Why do we have to fall victims to a cigarette that would give only temporary pleasure but later deprive us of a healthy life. Don’t you all think that there is a lesson for all of us to learn from the life of this old man? For all the smokers out there…Its never too late . Act now. It may be difficult but not impossible. The earlier the better. Quit NOW & help others quit.
