The other day I was returning from my baby's pediatrician's office and we had to stop at the light. I was trying to entertain my baby and accidentally my eyes caught the driver of the next car. She was a very old lady, yet independently finding her way in the maddening mid afternoon traffic. There are so many aged people who are so independent here, it's probably because they have their own vehicles, better standard of living, not to forget their attitude towards children and life in gerenal. I was thinking of my parents all the way home and after putting my baby for the afternoon nap, I called them up. My father sounded so frail and my mother bone tired after the day's work. Life is tough for older people, its almost like they are lost in their small world or is it we who are lost ? We have heard the expression ' remember to stop and smell the roses' but how often do we take the time to say, we love them, show we care?? Too often we get caught up in our busy schedules, work, doctor appointments, traffic,speeding and life in general. Do we ever realize that our life affects others too?? I come from a middle class family and I saw how tough it was for my parents to bring up three children, give us good education, worry about our careers, marriage and so on. With the limited finances, they did what best they could in the given circumstances. I know of instances when my parents went out of their way to provide for us, not looking into their needs. When parents don't think of themselves and their lives always revolve round us, we are the focus of their lives- that is why 'parenting never ends'. They spend their entire life worrying, caring and catering to our needs and when the time comes and they need to lean on us. Are we REALLY there ? The distinctive difference that I see here in the US is parents let go of their children after certain age, I am not saying that they don't love or participate in their lives but kind of maintain attached detachment. They let children decide what they want from their own life, let them commit mistakes and learn from them that is, if they want to learn. Space, is what they call. Many a times we think our parents are interfering with our independence and freedom ; I am not sure about you all but I did go through that phase but how rarely we realize that all they want is what is best for us ? Worrying and caring about us takes away so much out of them that they don't have time for themselves to have a life away from children. They say mother's heart is the first school and father's support is the strength for a child. I have come to realize after my baby was born how much our parents did for us, being a parent teaches you to look at the other side of the coin. Finally, I learnt to appreciate my parents better, something I probably never did, and now I will never take them for granted ever. Old age should not be a curse, it should be a relaxing time for them to spend with us and to look into the future with laughter and happiness.
