It is actually amazing but the facts of life are not taught in Universities or in Grad courses, we learn them when we go to kindergarten. Ask me how- we learn to play fair, be friends with other kids, share your toys, never hurt other kids, clean after yourself, learn to work for the reward, don't be afraid to fail and so on. So how come we forget all these lessons once we grow up, they are the golden rules of living. If we remember to store these lessons in the back of our mind whole wide world would be a better place to live. After my University degree, I chose teaching initially as my career. It was difficult to get a good break, after lot of trial and error I finally landed as a lecturer in a reputed college, and worked my way through the senior staff and students. Believe me, it was not easy to win students, they are grown ups and are not willing to accept a new lecturer being tossed on them one fine morning. I had some tough situations to face and being a fresh university pass out and with too many ideals I thought I should change the education system, needless to say I was thoroughly disappointed. Education system was fine, students turned out great eventually but it was the co-workers who surprised me. First of all you are not accepted with open arms, you are after all a junior lecturer. And all the donkeys work lands on you and it was as if you are there to do their job, experienced staff are better qualified than the junior staff who could have additional degrees to their credentials. One occasion such that, I was asked to set the paper by a senior colleague, who was not very accepting to the fact that I could also win my students and actually they could prefer me. My 22 year naive mind decided that it was an opportunity to prove myself to the whole department, I set a decent paper spending good bit of time over it and handed it over with the brightest of smiles. I was expecting complements and formal acceptance into the group, but instead we were all called the following day by our head of the dept to announce about the term paper, I was too thrilled to describe. I go there and right under my nose all the credit goes to my senior colleague, who got away with my paper, I was flabbergasted. I could never imagine some body doing that to me, well I kept quiet and let it pass by. Slowly but steadily I gained popularity vote from my dear students over the next one year and when I was getting married and shifting to B'lore, what a fond farewell it was. At that time my senior colleague said she will miss me(??) and accepted that though she did not welcome me initially, she regrets not knowing me well. I have never actually went back to teaching after that and shifted my field into writing, this is the first time I guess I am expressing this in print and boy it does feel good. One lesson though I learnt from this episode, don't let any one treat you like a lesser human being and don't keep quiet if you see a wrong doing. This is My face I don't mind it Because I am behind it It is the folks in front I jar at. How true this sounds????
