Around 130 years ago, thousands of people died in Finland. The reason was not floods, nor wars. It was famine coupled with hunger and poverty.
What would you expect from a nation with such dismal conditions?
Around three decades ago, politicians across political parties gathered together in Finland and have come to a consensus to place Finland one among the top high-tech nations in the world. Subsequently, they brought about massive changes in their education system, research institutions and every where a change was necessary to achieve the vision.
The result is so vivid today that Finland stands as a perfect example for what kind of miracles can be achieved if politicians and officials have a great vision and they lead their people to achieve that vision.
Fast forward to 2007, a Finnish company, which was dealing with wood products more than three decades ago, is now the biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world with more than 50 per cent of the world’s mobile phone market under its control. Yes, it is NOKIA.
There is one more Finnish company whose products are being used world over by millions and millions of people on any given day. Next time, when you use the elevators and escalators in skyscrapers or airports or train stations, look at the name of its manufacturer. Most likely, it would be KONE (a Finnish company).
The history of global IT field is not complete without mentioning one Operating system that took the global IT field by storm and created a whole new way of thinking. It can’t be none other than LYNUX, a Finnish invention.
That’s not all. Look at the myriad of mind-boggling rankings Finland achieved.
- Finnish teenagers stood at the number one position in Maths and Science during a test conducted among teenagers of all the industrialized nations in the world.
- Finland has been ranked at number sixth position in the world in business competitiveness in 2005.
- World Economic Forum ranked Finland as number one in the world growth competitiveness in 2003.
