Telugu Desam Spurns the Offer
…and the Climate is No Longer the Same!

With the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Politburo deciding to take a “principled stand” in refusing to accept the offer of the coveted Lok Sabha Speaker post, it is now evident that the Telugu Desam supremo has also resolved to take a fresh look at the party’s relationship with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the center. But that “fresh look”, according to the political observers in the state, will not, however, translate into any quick action, politically or otherwise, in the near future. A sure sigh of relief for the apologists of stable government, indeed! But there could be more skeletons in the cupboard than seen now. Although the TDP’s Politburo discussed the issues for hours and resolved to exert pressure on the Prime Minister A. B. Vajapayee to stick to the common agenda, it failed to define the exact meaning of “issue based” support to the NDA government. In the absence of a clear defined meaning, confusion within the TDP MPs, is bound to have its toll sooner or later. Though TDP has never been a participating partner in the union government, it is always taken for granted that the former would extend an unqualified support to the government’s actions. But now, that element of trust is conspicuous by its absence! If one jumps to conclude that the “outside ally”, which Telugu Desam is, is out to put its foot down in all the matters hereafter, one is wrong. As Chandra Babu Naidu himself categorically stated in Hyderabad on Saturday last (4th April 2002), “Telugu Desam Party’s support to the NDA government is issue-based”, which when translated into action means that the Telugu Desam MPs will hereafter take out more lung power and tongue power in the Parliament. In the past, whenever there was an issue in the Parliament, neither the Prime Minister, nor some other responsible leader ever needed to make a particular appeal to the TDP leadership requesting for support. Now the scenario is poised for a change. Babu’s men will send out a clear message that their support cannot be taken for granted, and that they need to be requested specifically for help on the floor. Even if such an attitude on part of the TDP cannot be construed as a motive to dislodge the BJP from power, it will be more in the nature of an exercise in proving the former’s pronounced objective of being “secular”, and that far, far away from the Hindutva-brand politics. With the summer scorching heat turning on the relationship between the Telugu Desam and the NDA over the voting on the Censure Motion in the Parliament last week, a new chapter of strained relationship is prone to be in the making. The cool and cordial relations that hitherto been existing, will become hot now!
