TALK TO GOD word count - 1047 “Teach her to talk to God, make Him her friend!” It was one of those parent teacher meets and the words were of my daughter’s class teacher who feels that parents should inculcate spirituality in children right from their tender ages. Very simple words but they made an impact and I started pondering over the place of spirituality in the hurry and bustle of life today. Present day life is hectic. We are constantly running after something, sometimes we don’t even know what thing. What with the time bound routine of rising early, getting ready to work, sweating it out there – setting targets, meeting deadlines; coming back home, often after a mighty encounter with traffic signals; and then again setting out to satisfy family and social obligations. The story with people staying back home is no different. Here too it is the same time bound routine of getting up early, helping children get ready for school, make their breakfast, attend to the office going spouse, then again cook for lunch, cook for dinner, sit with children for their studies, shunt between home and their myriad hobby classes and tuition classes, shop, buy things, stack them, store them and dispose them; keep liaison with family and friends and so on. Things have to go on, slotted and scheduled and there is no time to think about yourself leave alone God and spirituality. Quite often things get on to our nerves and it beats me then, how readily we start complaining, cursing fate and blaming God! “Wish things were not so hectic with me; why am I destined to keep looking for something or the other everywhere about, why can’t my socks be in place, who the hell took my digital diary; damn it, this is too much, I have had enough; why is God so merciless! ……” Momentarily we forget that God has given us the best of everything and that only we have messed things up. He gave us a wide choice, but we wanted all. That is why this confusion, these hew and cry. Stop running and take a breath! Look back and see how much you have come and from where. Think of your joys and sorrows. Think impartially, without bias. Sorrows will be much less compared to all the joys God has given you, all the good he has done to you. Think of your parents, the loving care and attention they gave you while shaping you into what you are today. Think of the day you managed securing a seat in the city’s best college; then of the day you graduated out of it. How you beamed with pride because you had got a distinction! Then the day you met your would be spouse, those moments of spell that made you think he or she is the person for you, think of the all those things you have achieved together! Think of the sweep of luck that fetched you job in a multinational company! Think of your children, the pride they have given you of creating, the joys of bringing them up, of giving them shelter and protection in your reassuring arms. Think of your promotions, applauds! Think of the comforts and luxuries you are enjoying and giving to your near and dear ones! So many good things come our way! When we enjoy all these, how often do we think of God? Come on, be frank! We take all the credits to ourselves! The taste of success makes us greedy for more. We chase it more rapidly with all our might and in the process, relegate our strength to expect and accept smallest of defeats to oblivion. That is why when our time and health are not able to combat the demands of this chase we start complaining. You have achieved, take pride in it. But do not grumble when things don’t work your way and do not blame God. Instead for a change try talking to Him! God is your friend! Tell him of your feelings, confide in him and seek his help. Tell him why you are happy, and why not, what is disappointing you. Thank him for the good he has done to you. Tell him about your dreams and aspirations, your fears and apprehensions. You may not find time for meditation, for reading or for engaging in any other spiritually benefiting activities. But to talk to God you need not allocate any special time nor take appointments! You can do it at home, at work, at any place, any hour, day or night. God is the Almighty, the anchor on whom we rest all our hopes and desires and all our faith. He is again the one who is going to give strength and courage to keep the going smooth. You may have suffered, lost, got defeated and broken down. But he has picked you up every time and put you into one piece, blown life into you made you face the challenges again. One man complained to God, “you deceived me,” he said, you promised to accompany me in my journey and see, during the times I have suffered most you only see my footprints on the road. Where were You?” God replied, “My dear fellow, those are my footprints, not yours, for you were not walking at all. I was carrying you on my shoulders!” True, look back through all your sorrows and sufferings, struggles and successes and happiness and enjoyments and you will know that God has given you the best course, befitting your circumstances. It may not have been in the way we wanted, but surely in the best way possible! My girl talks to God ever from the day her teacher asked her to do so. Every night, when I see her making her prayers to God before going to sleep, I feel reassured that she is finding someone to talk to of her own inmost feelings, asking questions, confiding and confessing and earnestly seeking help and support. If not anything, I know this faith will give her sustenance to face, enjoy and experience the mysteries of life yet to unfold on her. Talk to God! Maybe, this tete-a-tete will refresh you. Then, it will be a new you reaching out to a new world!
