[1] Prince Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth sultan of Golconda from the Qutubshahi dynasty, felt in deep love with a banjaran girl named ' Baghmati' from the village of Chichlam. A city was modeled (in 1589) after 'Isfann' in Iran and built under the supervision of the prime minsiter Mir Momin. The city was named 'Bhagya Nagar' after Quili's love, 'Bhagmati'. Bhagmati was named as 'Hyder Mahal' after she was married to Quli. After Hyder Mahal's death, the city was re-named in memory of her. Later on, it came to be known as 'HYDERABAD'. [2] In 1798, a subsidiary alliance for military and political cooperation was signed between Nizam and the British East India Company. Thereafter, an area north of what is now the Hussain Sagar Lake was established as a contonment. After Nizam ruler 'Sikander Jah' the area was named as Secunderabad. [3] Golconda Fort was originally built in 12th Century by the Hindu Kakatiyas. The fort was reinforced by masonry by the Bahamanis who occupied it in 1363 A.D. The structure was later expanded by Qutub Shahi Kings into a massive fort in 1525. In 1687, the fortress was besieged by the mogul emperor Aurangazeb. [4]In 1591, Quli Qutub Shah built a grand structure, 'Charminar', as a form of talisman to ward off the dreaded epidemic disease that was ravaging the city. [5] Hussain Sagar was built in the 16th century. The lake was named so to express the gratitude of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah to Hussain Shah Wali who helped him to recover from illness. [6] Persian. It was followed by Urdu. [7] The Falaknuma (Star of Heaven) palace was built by Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra Bahadur, the fifth Ameer of the Paigah in the nineteenth century. Designed by an Italian architect and built in marble, the Falaknuma was purchased by Seventh Nizam , Mir Osman ali Khan, who used it as royal guest house. [8] Construction of the mosque started in 1614 by Abdullah Quli Qutub Shah, but was completed by Aurangazeb when he annexed Golconda in late 17th Century. [9] 'Rani of Sirnapalli' (presently in Nizamabad dist) was supposed to have good business relationship with the Nizam rulers. The particular business area (gunj) in Secunderabad was named after her as 'Rani Gunj'. [10] When Qutub Shahis were ruling the parts of Hyderabad with Golconda as the capital, a large number of Iranis came here to develop relations around 16th century. Along with them, they brought their customs, culture, and traditions. Their hot favourites, green and black teas were introduced to local people. The black and green tea introduced by Iranians which was later on called 'Irani - Chai' was totally different from the tea available in other parts of the country. The basic difference is the way they prepare.
