The Communal riots and Fiza
- Ms. Prasanthi Uppalapati
  Page: 1 of 1
Recently I had seen the movie, Fiza. I want to share my feelings regarding that film. This was the film which was picturised about the traumas and the chaso that the communal violence creates in the lives of common people, who doesn't bother about the religion, which is not their prime concern. 'Fiza' is the name of the heroine Karishma Kapoor in the film, Fiza Ikramullah, a powerful character. This story is about how the family of Fiza was ruined, how life was taken from their lives due to communal riots. What will be the pathetic condition of the people whose family members are missed are died in those riots. Fiza's family consists of her younger brother, Aman,(Hrithik Roshan) their mother,(Jaya Bachan), a widow of a school teacher. She teaches Urdu in a local school. Fiza pursues her graduation. Her brother, Aman, is good at Painting. He is not interested in Studies. He fall in love with a neighbouring girl who also loves him. Her brother is found to be missing after the riots. Their search remains futile. Some years passes but to no use. She, after being disgusted with each and every possible approach, submits an article to a leading Daily. Though the editor first refuses, accepts and publishes it. Then media people gives special coverage on the issue. Leaders of both religions try to calm her down in all possible ways but she doesn't yield to them. In the mean time, her brother's lover gets married to another person. A man named Anirudh loves Fiza and her mother also accepts the alliance. But she doesn't think in that way. Her only wish is to find her brother. Meanwhile, her lover expresses a doubt that her brother might be joined with a terrorist group. As a proof he shows her a downloaded picture of a militant in Kashmir area. So she decides to go to Kashmir to search him and at last she finds him as a militant. She scolds him and he narrates her why he has to take such a decision. He kills someone in the riot to save some people and himself in riots. He fears that Police might caught him and while someone chases him, he runs away with fear and he was saved by a terrorist named Murad Khan(Manoj Bajpai). He takes him to the valley and poisons his mind. She requests her brother to come back to home and she also threatens him that she will report about his group to the army when he refuses. So he decides to come back. Her mother rejoices for his arrival. She celebrates a lot. But he feels very empty at heart. He happens to meet his lover in a hospital and came to know that she is married and is pregnant. Though everyone around him plays and enjoys, he has nothing to feel happy about and so he feels very sorry. He again meets Murad Khan and promised him to do whatever he wants and bring money and give her sister, a present, a set of bangles to wear in her marriage. (He came to know that Anirudh loves her and also test his love and confirms that he will take care of her sister and mother.) He quarrels with Rowdies of his street when they unnecessarily beats a stranger. So they complain to Police. Actually those rowdies used to harass his sister also. So when police come and arrest him, these people abuse his sister and so notwithstanding it, he kills them with revolver and escapes. His mother feels shocked by that incident. So she walks into the river and kills herself as a punishment for not being able to bring up the children in a proper way. Meanwhile he has to kill the leaders of two sects who form as allies for elections as directed by Murad khan. He kills them and Murad khan orders his another followers to kill him also. So he kills them also and runs away. Fiza, informed by the lover of her brother that she found him near the election rally , suspects some danger and reach there along with her lover to search for him. She follows him and meets him in the railway station. He requests her sister to kill him because he has no way out.So he pleads for death in the hands of his own sister, other than to face proceedings and torture in the hands of Police. He justifies everything he has done. So she kills him. This is the Story. A must watch film for everyone. Every Scene, every dialogue, every lyric, every song, each and every dance movement so decently carved and the performances are simply superb. I want to share 5 to 6 scenes which I very much admire. 1) When Fiza expresses her feeling about Indian Flag. (Tri colour Flag consisting of Green, Saffron and white. Green resembles Muslims and Saffron, Hindus) Green and Saffron are only a part of the Indian flag. They are beautiful that way only. They shouldnt' try to occupy the whole flag. 2) When she finds her brother as a militant, the dialogue sequence is very wonderful and heartrending. a) When she comments that to run away from the situation is a cowardly act, he replies that he is not a hero and he has no wish to become a hero. b) When she exclaims and complains that he has changed, he says life only changed and he has nothing to do with the circumstances. He is just flowing in the currents of them. 3) The expressions and feelings of Aman when he looks around the people and the emptiness in his life. His mother always wish him to be happy and complains that he is moody. He couldn't give any response to her. Parents love us a lot and they can't see us moody or silent. But at the same time we cannot express the turmoil in our mind to them , because they feel very sorry and get disturbed a lot. 4) The hospital scene wherein he meets his lover. The dialogues and expressions are excellent. She notices and calls him. when he is talking with her,her husband comes and she introduces him to her husband. He asks him, 'Why did you be mischievous with my wife while you play in your childhood?' He replies, 'That's why she married you. Otherwise she might have married me only'. Her husband: 'Being her childhood friend, why don't you attend the marriage?' His answer: 'I came late'. Her husband go to the doctor when she calls him and he returns and greets her saying that pregnancy is confirmed. Excellent shot and fabulous expression by Hrithik. What a puzzled expression and immediate clarification digesting the truth. So beautifully expressed. When we quarrel with our friends or loved ones, we usually forget that it is, when we meet accidentally. After some seconds only we can think and remembers the reality i.e, quarrel or separation. She is his lover. How can she be pregnant? That is the puzzled look and immediately, 'oh, she married him, know ' sort of realisation. (In this scene, we, the viewers feel and pray that there should not be any such situation in the lives of any true lovers). 5) The dance of Fiza when she meets her lover in a discotheque. She is usually reserved and a tough person. Her friend makes her up with a modern attire(Pant and Shirt with a overcoat). Anirudh wants Fiza to dance and when she refuses, he expresses some sort of irritation and complains that she should come out of her reservedness and moody nature. Then wounded by that comment from him, she sings and dance. The lyric, the music and each and every step is wonderful. We should especially say, 'Hats Off' to Saroj Khan, the dance director for such steps very apt to the situation and the story. Usually these are means as the manly steps. The inherent meaning is that a girl is capable of doing anything. There is nothing as such that she can't do. But she maintains dignity. If she is challenged, she proves what she is. This we should understand. One line in the song is there which I like the most: 'World is bad, but I don't bother because I have confidence on me'. 6) The lyrics of a song which is sung by the neighbouring friend of her mother when she dies and her corpse is being taken to the burial ground. 7) Finally when she accepts her brother's request to kill him. The final dialogues are also so heartrending. Can't but. Everyone who is in the place of Fiza wil do that only but can't either. Very tough situation, so pathetic. A film which ought to be seen. We can know the hard realities. How the riots make the life of a common man so pathetic? How they go into the hands of anti-social elements? How and why they can't lead a normal life?
