Articles: My Thoughts | Whose English is it anyway! - UK
| |
Indians have excellent control over written English, yet when it comes to pronunciation, we do not always sound right. Very often, the origin we come from (or) even where we were educated, dictates the Accent and Intonations, which are so important in a language. Rigorous speech training help to reduce this, but some faint traces are left behind. However, I must add that Americans, and for that matter even the English themselves, do not always have the correct (or) most easily comprehensible accent.
The main problem is that while Americans think in English, we think in our mother tongue and then translate it into English while speaking. And this is where we suffer. For instance, so many of us are guilty of saying ‘a hot cup of tea’ – where we’re describing the cup rather than the tea – instead of ‘a cup of hot tea’ which describes the tea.’.
As a nation, we do speak very good English. That is why most Indians score easily over other people (or) other nationalities when they move to other countries. But it will still take time for Indians to speak with a polished accent and fluency.
