We got her from churning the milky cosmic oceans. We brought her to earth with a promise that we shall pray and protect her. But we fall on our words. First we left them on streets, now we are that hungry that we could not help, we forget that she is a mother whose milk is like elixir to many orphans and children. We forget that as a mother shows the highest mark of affection for her young, the passion of the cow for her calf is just as legendary and often referred to mothers love to kids. Sanctity of the cow is perhaps the foremost sentiment of Hindus. Indian scriptures tell us that the cow is a gift of the gods to the human race. In fact, the cow is even more than a mother in the sense that it fulfils all the needs of her children as well. Cow represents the Divine Mother that sustains all human beings and brings them up as her very own offspring. In Indian mythology and legend, it is with the cult of Krishna that the cow is closely connected. The holy cow is considered lord shiva’s chariot. Cow’s milk not only builds up our body but also gives the stability of emotions and a serene nature. 'Cow urine is used for ayurvedic drugs, especially to treat many skin diseases. It is well known disinfectant. Anti-septic property is also the attribute of cow dung is mixed with clay to form a plastering medium for mud huts. It is a proven fact that mud huts plastered with cow dung keep insects and reptiles away. In traditional India cow dung is also considered as holy and auspicious that women plaster their courtyards with cow dung and invite goddess ‘lakshmi’, the goddess of wealth. The litter of cow is recycled to produce biogas; it is also used as manure. Besides the leather, the cow also gives its horns and bones and other parts of the body like intestines, which have various uses. Cow is also connected to ceremonies and rituals, almost from conception to cremation. The holy book preaches giving cow in charity is paving way to paradise after death. The holy cows footprints in a new house is considered to be pious and good omen to inhabitants. Is agricultural and pastoral country like India turned to slaughterhouse for cows? Are we really running out of money that we sell our cows to butchers knife? That cows which are treated as to be the real wealth of the people in ethnic India. First we stray them on streets then we wish to taste this holy cow. Is the cow just not more than a farm animal? Does it not mean anything else in our life and culture? When someone dares not to touch a pig just because it is considered as ‘haram’. Then how could we ever think to kill and eat a holy cow, which is more than a mother? Did we forget the stories told by our grannies that even in dying, the cow gives us its hide, which is prized for its softness. Is the holy cow real bane of modern times where ancient Indian values seem to be out of place in an industrial society? The westerners say that our country is known for its principles of vegetarianism and non-violence; it is a shame that not only is the cow treated so badly but also cow slaughter is still permitted in India. Lets not turn vegetarians but at least not turn beefarian. Just think are we trying to westernise or middle easternise our self...
