MAKARA SANKRAMANA is one of the important festival celebrated on 14th Janauary every year.All Hindus celebrates this festival with prayers to their Istdevatha. On this day The Sun enters Makara capricorn sign during the time between Magashira masa and Pushya masa. The time circle is divided into 12 zones for 12 months of theyear. In a circle of 360 degree 30 degree for each month is recorded in the time circle. The Sun travels through these tweleve zones of the zodiac in the tweleve months of the year. The Sun is presiding diety in the Navagraha and also in the solar system. Sun God provides the necessary energy to prepare the food for the plant kingdom. With out Sun the plants and other living beings can not survive in the world. It is the time of harvest for the farmers and people enjoy the abundant food grains and people submit the prayers to GOD Almighty for having given the food grains and abundant crop. Weather in the month of Margahira mas is col and nice. This festival is also called as Utarayan Punya Kala The Sankranthi festival will bring harmony and love in the family, as people gather together and worship their Ista Devatha and excahnge the gifts. We read in vedas :--- Asatho maa sath Gamaya (lead me from unreal to real); Tamaso maa jyothi Gamaya (lead me from darkness into the Light); Murthyor maa Amritham Gamaya (Lead me from death to Immortality). It is customary for people to chant this manthr and pray for GOD for their prosparity and welfare.The Sun God is diety of intelligence and the moon is the diety of the mind. Sun movement to wards North calledUttarayana and movements towards south is called Dhakshinayan. In our place Sringeri both Brahmins and Vysyas the festival is celebrated with the morning prayer and pooja in the house . Till sesme seeds sugar or jagery mixture with cashew nuts and/or ground nuts are placed in front of GOD for Nevaidya an then this will be distributed to all their friends and relatives. On this day it is a custom to offer a mixture of Jaggery and sesame (til). Jaggery or sugar is sweet and is a symbol of Love. Til is also known as ‘sneha’ which means friendship. Therefore the offering of the Jaggery-till mixture means offering to the people love surcharged with friendliness. The message is : Develop harmony towards every one. Thus the festival Sankranthi promotes love among one's kith and kin and friends as all of them come together. Newly married son in law is invited to the house and given the gifts in the first sankranthi festival.People go to Suryanarayan Temple for worship of SUN GOD and in the evening also they visit other temple and also have Chandra Darshan. Both SUN and MOON are worshiped and the sweet till mixture distributed to all the friends and relations. The new crop of paady plants are placed one on each side of the front door of the house and new crop of paddy is worshiped in the front room of the house respecting GOD Almighty for giving given plenty crop. By using the cow dung they make Benaka's keeping the plant or a new crop sticking on the top of Benakas and keep one on each side of the bottom of the front door and also on some other two doors in the hosue preferably one infront of the prayer or pooja room. These three Benaka's represent Gopala GOD ,Goverdhana hill and Govu ( Cow) who is mother because we get milk from her. One who gives milk is considered as mother. It has been believed Krishna lifted the Goverdhana hills in this month in Dwaparayuga. In olden days people used to sprinkle water mixed with cow dung in front of their houses. The cow dung helped to destroy bacteria in the atmosphere. Cow dung was considered a symbol of health and happiness. In villages they make speacial alankaras to the cows and garland them and give them special attention for their welfare. This was a custom from Lord Krishna's time from Dwaparyuga. In he villages during the festival they dress the bull and cow and trained them to act like Rama and Sita and goes house to house presenting the drama of Sita Rama wedding and make As a vehicle of Siva, it has an honoured place in siva temple as Nandi. Its eyes are always directed towards the Lord in the sanctum. Nandi is worshipped before one enters the sanctum. After the cows had been fed with the sweetened rice, all the cattle used to be decorated and taken around the markets in procession. This season, the festival is called in Tamilnadu as Matupongal the Pongal festival of the cattle. It is custom in our place the elders in the family go and have dip in the River Thunga and priest will come and help all the leders to give tharpana to their ancestors on the muhortha in which sun goes into Capricorn in Zodiac. it is very important to remember our ancestors on such auspicious day submit our respects pitha maha and prapithamaha who have done lots of sacrifice for their families This was the day Adishankaracharya also took Sanyasa. This is the day Bhishma waited to decide to leave the earth after the Mahabharatha war.
