The Recent announcement of Mr. Shabbir Ali, Minister of Information concerning allocation of over 230 acres of land to judges of High court, IAS, IPS and other All India Service Officers, MLAs and MPs both present and former and to the Journalists, raises a few critical questions about democracy and welfare state.. The press announcement of Mr. Shabbir Ali came after a cabinet meeting and throughout the press conference Mr. Shabbir Ali was seen telling reporters “ apna akhri me hai’making the enticement revealing. Allocation of land to MLAs, MPs, IAS, IPS officers, Judges and journalists is not anything new but a fairly old practice. The decision of the present government does not warrant any critique, had it been simply a decision of allocation of land. Critics who have been closely watching the attitude of the state government towards distribution of land specially in and around of Hyderabad and parts of Ranga Reddy district during last decade evidence a perceptible change during last two years -ever since the present dispensation took reins. When Sri Rajasekhar was the opposition leader there was a lot of hue and cry about allocation of land indiscriminately to industrial houses which include software industry. This phenomenon of indiscriminate allocation of land everybody thought would stop after Rajasekhar Reddy took over as the chief minister. Surprisingly the present government too chose to continue allocation of land and in fact, has gone a step ahead in doling out land to industrial houses. No one disputes the imperative of allocation of land to industrial houses but what has been happening in Hyderabad is something intriguing and interesting. There seems to be a blatant mismatch between the actual requirements of industrial houses and the allocation of land sought by them. There is a feeling that the industrial houses are in fact, seeking allocation of larger areas of land disproportionate to their actual requirement just to translate escalated land value to their net assets and thereby to leave an impact in the share market. I make this as a passing reference since my area of concern is related to this.
