- Dr. Rajeshwar Mittapalli

As can be expected, Ameer begins to suspect that something very objectionable has been going on between Rajeswari and Meera, jealous lover that he is. Meera continues to meet her secretly. Rajeswari tries to persuade him to meet her when Ameer is around. She wants both of them and would not like to lose one for the other. She is in a real fix trying to please both and balancing her love for both -- sisterly and motherly affection for one and adult sexual love for the other. She proposes that all three of them should take bath together and eat together from the same earthen container. These conciliatory gestures of Rajeswari come to a naught. Ameer keeps sharpening his knife. Obviously, he is wrestling with some disturbing thought. That night while Rajeswari and Ameer are absorbed in each other at their favourite hill top retreat, Meera, who has secretly come there in search of her, falls into a gorge and shouts for help. He is hanging suspended from the branch of a tree. Rajeswari is in agony at the prospect of losing Meera forever. But unexpectedly, and putting his jealousy aside, Ameer goes swiftly down and saves Meera from the clutches of death. Rajeswari and Meera behave closely with each other right in the presence of Ameer from now on. Still it is only sisterly and motherly love for him on her part. Ameer reacts by stopping to talk to her but makes fierce love to her all the same. Meera comes in the night, while they are fast asleep, wakes her up and asks her to follow him. She is extremely tired of love-making and would not like to walk but Meera insists that she should go with him immediately. She reluctantly follows him. On the way, Meera declares to her that he would spend all his life in her service and that it is his bounden duty to rescue her from the devil, the shaitan called Ameer for he has so badly “ill-treated” and physically “abused” her. Obviously, Meera does not understand what it is like to make adult love. Rajeswari is hardly able to pay attention to his babble. He enthuses her to walk but not for long. While her eyes are drooping with heavy sleep, Meera “makes love” to her but it all happens as if in a dream. She has neither the power to hurt him nor the will to resist him. They fall asleep on the sand dunes, half sunk in the river water.
