The Road not taken

It was third year and I surprisingly saw lizzy in the library studying very seriously which she never did. Library is my favourite place but not hers. Those days I was in touch with her she was telling her friends that her hearts are always in the canteen. I used to hate canteen. The boys used to get into fights there. She told that she was preparing for GRE. That surely was not my stuff. I used to tell friends I am a gr 8 patriot. I was not preparing for it as I never wanted to go abroad. Later the count of people I know preparing for GRE increased. Still I stuck to my word. Lizzy got highest score that no one got in GRE. Why not she had good schooling. I know people who had some papers left out in B.E. and then who got high GRE scores and joined in the next semesters. They made 6 months semesters short 2 month semesters for our batch. As the people going for higher studies were unable to join on time in those universities. Management too? People like me got affected as we joined late due to branch transfers. It was Final year I was looking at the notice boards. Telco and other companies have come for campus recruitments. The questions were in the GRE pattern I regretted for not having been prepared for it. There were only 3 % campus recruitments. They picked very few from the college. Obviously I cannot be in the first top ten in the college. My father used to always say all those people who got good percentages in colleges are useless stuff in the industry and those who are average 60% candidates were hardworking. I lost touch with everyone by now. One day my best friend dropped in and told me that she is writing GRE and asked me to do that. I still did not like the idea. She went to Australia and then to USA I heard. She was like vanished. I heard lizzy got settled in USA along with her husband and friends. My father used to say going to USA and going to “Katika” is one and the same. The person never returns back. It was two months after the exams, I left to one of my friends house where I found out he already left abroad. His mother was crying saying that he had to do all household chores himself. I chuckled to myself. But to my dismay I came to know most of them were gone abroad for the next semester. I got depressed hearing to this. No one to invite for birthday parties. No one to take to restaurants and movies. No one to come home and chat with me. No one left out to come home for lunch. Kahah gaye wo log? In the meantime two of my cousins who I was close to and with whom I was brought up together also went to America for higher studies. Did I take the road not taken? Slowly I came to know in the neighbourhood most of the houses are habitated with old couples whose children are either gone abroad for higher studies and settled abroad, gone in search of the job or got married to some one abroad. What do these old couples do? After ther retirement what do they expect. Don’t they get bored. Don’t they need some one to take care of them. If suddenly the old man gets sick what can the poor wife do? Whom can she turn over to? Who will take care of them? Even if they had lived in a high job whole life how much would have got left over from their savings after they spent all their money on children’s education and bought up? Is it not childerns responsibility to look after their parents in their old age. Don’t they want to vain away their time playing with their grand children? What kind of the life we are giving those people who brought us into this world? We should have some gratitude towards them. How can we take this road which has kate hee kate no phool.
