In fact the solution works consciously. Actually, by diverting attention, one pushes negativity to the unconscious, and continues to generate and multiply defilements. At the surface is peace, but in the depths of the mind is a volcano of negativity. Other explorers of truth went further; and by experiencing reality of mind and matter, recognised diverting attention is running from the problem.
Escape is no solution
One must face the problem. Whenever negativity arises, observe it. As soon as one observes mental defilement, it loses strength. Slowly it withers and is uprooted.
A good solution: It avoids extremes-suppression and free license. Keeping negativity unconscious will not eradicate it; and allowing it to manifest in action will create more problems. But if one observes, defilement passes and one eradicates negativity, one is freed from defilement. Wonderful, but is it practical? For an average person, is it easy to face defilement? When anger arises, it overpowers us so quick we don't notice.
Later, when it passes, we start crying and repenting, begging pardon from this or that person or God. But next time we are in a similar situation, we react same way. Repenting does not help. The difficulty is you are not aware when it starts. It begins unconsciously and then gains so much strength it overwhelms, and one cannot observe it.
