CHATURDANT- THE ELEPHANT AND LAMBAKARN- THE RABBIT
There used to live a huge elephant named Chaturdant in a forest. He was the king of all the elephants. Once due to prolong drought all the lakes in the forest dried up. So all the elephants requested Chaturdant to find a way out of this problem.
Chaturdant then led all the elephants to a lake, which used to be full of water all the year round. After travelling for five days the herd of the elephant reached that lake exhausted by thirst. So first of all, they quenched their thirst. Then they began to play in the water.
At the shore of that lake, lived many rabbits that had dug their burrows in the soft soil. In their plays, the elephants trampled many of the rabbits and destroyed their burrows. Many of the rabbits lost their limbs.
When the elephants went away, all the rabbits assembled there and gave the matter a serious thought that since there was no water in other lakes except that one, the elephants were sure to return there and kill many more rabbits by trampling them to death. The more they thought graver the problem appeared.
At last, they thought of a plan, according to which the most intelligent among them - Lambakarna was to be sent as an emissary, to the king of the elephants.
Lambakarna proceeded via the same path through which the elephants were expected to arrive. He climbed up a big tree and waited for the elephants. After sometime he saw the king of the elephant coming. He said-
'O Wicked elephant! Why do you dare to trample the loved ones of the deity Moon? Since you have killed many rabbits the Moon deity has been angry with you.'
The elephant was astonished. He asked who was he. The rabbit replied-
'My name is Lambakarn. I am the envoy of the deity Moon. I live in Chandraloka. The Moon has sent me to warn you.'
The elephant curiously asked about the deity Moon. The rabbit replied the Moon was in the lake where it had come to enquire about the well beings of the rabbits.
The elephant expressed his desire to meet Moon. The rabbit took him to the lake in the water of which the elephant saw the reflection of the Moon. He was convinced about the authenticity of the rabbit's tale. The elephant then went back and never returned ever since.
After completing his story the crow said -
'This is the reason why I say that just the name of a great person is enough to ensure a problem free life.'
'A person who wants to live happily must never choose a master who is mean, lazy and an addict, otherwise he will meet the same fate as a rabbit and a bird met when they got destroyed by a mean counsellor', said the crow.
All the birds wanted to know this story. -
RABBIT AND THE BIRD
Earlier I used to live on a tree. In the hollow of the same tree there also used to live a bird named Kapinjal. Both of us were great friends. We used to have discussion on various topics like spiritual and religious matters. One day, Kapinjal did not return home in the evening. I became very anxious about his well being. But when he did not return even after many days, I was sure that he was no more.
One day a rabbit, finding the hollow empty, started living in it. I did not object as I was happy that I would get a chance to develop friendship with him. I was very surprised to see Kapinjal one day. He had become very healthy and was looking very good. He became very sad to see the rabbit occupying his house. He requested the rabbit to vacate his house but the rabbit refused.
When they realized that it was beyond their capability to resolve their dispute, they decided to seek advice of a religious person. A cat was listening to them. He swiftly picked some Kush grass in his hand and arrived at the shore of a lake. He raised his forearms and looking at the Sun started pronouncing these words.
'This world is meaningless. The relatives are companions for a temporary period. Life itself is impermanent therefore one must try to follow the path of virtuosity.'
When both of them heard the cat chanting such sacred words, they thought that he was the best judge to settle their dispute. Kapinjal requested the rabbit to seek the cat's advice. The rabbit narrated the tale of their dispute. The cat told him, as he was old he could not listen properly. He requested them to tell everything loudly in his ears. Both the bird and the rabbit fell in the trap of the cat. As soon as they approached the cat, it killed and devoured them at once.
After completing his story the crow again warned the birds against electing the owl as their king. All the birds were convinced that the owl was not fit to become their king.
The owl, which had already occupied the throne, was awaiting for the moment when the birds would crown him as the king. One of his informers informed him about the obstacle caused by the crow.
The owl angrily went towards the crow and asked why had he stymied his coronation.
The crow too felt sorry that he had developed unwanted enemity with the owl. Since that day the owl has been an enemy of the crows.
After hearing this story Meghavarna asked -
'What should we do now?'
The old minister replied that he himself would go to the enemy’s place and kill him by deception. He said -
Even the most intelligent and powerful man can be defeated with the help of deceptive tactics, just as the case was with the Brahmin whose goat was deceitfully taken away by the thugs.
Meghavarna wanted to know how the Brahmin was cheated by the tricksters. The old minister narrated the following story -
