Articles: TP Features | Policy or Posture? - Mr. Sreenivas YL

Given the intrinsic relation that the two nations have, we need to distinguish meticulously our opposing American war policy and opposing America as a whole. We must be conscious of the fact that George Bush is visiting India at the behest of the Indian Government. It is an official invitation of the Indian government. It is obvious that the left parties are subtly part of the central government and the UPA. It is intriguing to understand why the left parties chose to oppose the visit of Bush now when they had an option to forestall an official invitation from the Indian government. A prudent Prime Minister like Manmohan Singh would not have extended the invitation at the first place without consulting the left parties, for he has been aware of the diehard opposition of the left vis-à-vis America. A close look at the tenor of the protest sphere headed by the left parties reveals their hypocrisy. Why have the left parties protesting now?
Hon’ble Prime Minister visited US last year. During a conversation with Mr. George Bush Dr. Manmohan Singh reportedly shared certain views expressed by the former Prime Minister Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee over a certain issue relating to US during a debate in the Lok Sabha. The reported brief of the Prime Minister on what had transpired in the Lok Sabha was widely construed as an utterly imprudent act and a radical departure from the established norms of Indian foreign policy. It was indeed an aberration. However, the left parties who call Mr. Bush all names today did not deem it an issue to be condemned. Further, Mr. Sitaram Yechuri said that what the prime minister did was to share a statement of fact. Thus, the left parties while endorsing the deviation from the traditional foreign policy accepted America as a referee. In their anxiety to support the government from the widespread criticism – since the main criticism has come from the BJP- the left parties sacrificed ideology for power.
