In no time, those huge buildings (some were even 25 floors) were abandoned. There were no takers, even for free. Buildings started getting damaged as there was no maintenance. They became shelters for drug mafia and other criminal activities. Those streets and buildings looked like war-torn streets. Even I saw such streets.
Then, an innovative idea came to somebody’s mind that these buildings can be converted into apartments catering to the niche market of senior citizens with or without assisted living. One businessman took the risk and started this venture and it clicked. Then followed some more entrepreneurs who would buy the buildings at throw away prices, renovate them and convert them into apartments. Soon, senior citizens from all over started coming to this area to spend their post-retirement life there.
Part of these changes unfolded in front of my eyes. It brought so much enlightenment in me. Having seen their lives from close-by, I can say one thing that senior citizens in the USA have more than enough money to spend for their lives but they lack what is most important at that fag end of the life, and that is love, affection, genuine concern, emotional and mental support, hope, spiritual support and a feeling that they are wanted and respected for all the contribution they made to the advancement of the civilization and society. They want to indulge in activities that interest them but there is little scope.
That’s when it came to my mind that nations such as India can cater to the needs (if not all, at least part of it) of senior citizens from Western nations. They are more than happy to spend money for experiences that can make them feel happy and satisfied.
This is not a small population. Almost all Western nations are now seriously concerned that more or less fifty per cent of their population is already retired or retiring soon. So, we can imagine the size of this population with no dearth of money for services that can make them happier.
Thus, I started doing further research on this concept, not just in the USA but also during my stay in Europe.
Later, I coined the term for this market as “Senior Citizen Services Outsourcing”.
