Scientists revealed that those pesticides that are meant to kill living organisms in agriculture would also affect negatively on the human-beings and cause wide variety of diseases. Hence, they advised to consume food that is produced in natural way i.e. organically.
Thus emerged the concept of ‘organic’ farming. In fact, until Indian government introduced pesticides and other chemicals in agriculture as part of Green Revolution (GR), Indians were practicing only organic farming. It’s been more than two and a half decades since GR has been first introduced in India and most of our farmers have almost abandoned organic farming. A vast and precious wisdom has gone down the drain.
The demand for organic food is skyrocketing around the world, especially in Western nations. Even in India more and more enlightened people are opting for organic food.
The next big economy is going to be ecology.
Let’s look at the statistics. In the European Union nations, the organic farm sector grew by about 25% a year between 1993 and 1998 and since 1998 it is estimated to have grown by around 30% a year. Based on the past growth and the demand for organic food products, some experts predict that by the year 2020, the organic food market around the world could grow much beyond US$700 billion. In India alone, the market for organic food is estimated at 15,000 crore rupees. What’s more, the market is growing at an astonishing 25% per annum.
So, as a person who works on emerging fields and markets, I can say that if at all our Indian government has the vision and the ability to visualize the future, organic farming and products alone can wipe out the entire unemployment in rural and urban India. The market is vast and it is growing fast.
Why India can succeed in organic farming?
