What is family
- Mr. Bhuvanendra Bhupala

The love, caressing, nearness to the parent(s) that a child enjoys, brings in the child a sense of belonging and oneness and also gives a feeling of total security. Affectionate hug, cuddling, ruffling of hair etc., make subtle, strong and positive impressions on the child’s mind, which remain more or less ingrained in the inner layers of it’s sub-consciousness mind permanently for a life time. In the yester years, parents were living in a ‘Joint Family’, work together and raise the children. Parents themselves were in turn consulting their parents and other elderly in family for any valuable advice during crucial stages in life. In fact, the elders were guiding the younger ones very effectively based on their practical out look of life and experiences. These days, we are going to the external agency called, ‘Counselors’ whom we have to blindly trust. Paradoxically, we have to narrate our own story uninhibitedly to the stranger (Counselor) for a reasonable solution from him. In this context, it reminds me of the idiom “A known devil is better than an unknown Angel”. Quite funny isn’t it? In today’s highly mobile society, it is increasingly common for members of a family to be scattered geographically. They may see each other only once in few years or less. Some feel that staying together with family may mean sacrificing career opportunities in the changing times of high-tech world. Once a person gets married and has children, his priorities could shift over time. There are many advantages of living with family concepts. Let’s have a look at some of them: - Practically speaking, it means Grand parents or other relatives are available for babysitting and other kinds of help (This results in clear savings of thousands of $ per annum per child which otherwise would be expended on kindy-care). - Adult children are in a position to assist frail parents or Grand parents with errands and household tasks like housekeeping, gardening, laundry and doing dishes. - Close contacts with grand children can also help ease a widowed parent’s loneliness and provide a sense of purpose. - Common kitchen and home cooked food means goodbye to ‘takeaways’ ($ savings) and therefore ensures fat-free food resulting in keeping good health.
