2) The Mumbai bomb blasts on 11th July rocked the entire nation. A large number of people including women and children were brutally killed. Owing to increased media presence the entire nation silently watched the rescue operations in which apparently people from all communities participated. Towards the 12th afternoon electronic media started reporting that “the Mumbaikar” is back at work undeterred by the violence the previous day. In fact, the civil society of Mumbai appeared to have forgotten the entire incident with the new dawn on 12th morning. The newspapers and the electronic media were appreciative of the so called “common man” who was back at work. The existential stress which average citizen experiences could easily be understood but the utter sense of apathy and immunity need some introspection. When militants execute a well planned conspiracy to kill innocent people across Mumbai with a view to shock and browbeat the entire nation, the civil society should have responded in a matured way. Silence is not the answer for terrorism. The collective solidarity of all the people of Mumbai should have been demonstrated peacefully in the streets of Mumbai to convey the message loud and clear to the terrorists that they wouldn’t tolerate such violence. However, the Mumbai civil society preferred a submissive approach towards a problem. Terrorist attacks should not be taken the way we take train accidents or bus accidents. 3) In Chattisghad Maoists have attacked a Salwajudum rescue camp and killed the innocent Girijans. Though the killing of innocents is not new to the Maoist groups, brutal massacre of children and women has been certainly a deviation from their own professed ideology of violence. Houses were set on fire reducing innocents’ children and women to ash. Perhaps the “Errabolu incident” would be the only example in the history of any revolutionary organization across the world where innocents were killed with such vengeance and brutality. The State government of Chattisghad accepted its failure and the Central Government convened a meeting to discuss the escalation of Maoist violence in the state. Once again there have been resolutions and statements about the conviction of the government in tackling the violence.
