For shining India...

And that brings me to another greatest concern, lack of respect for law. We keep telling how wonderful the laws are in US, Singapore, Australia. But try applying the same law here, and you would see howls of protest from every one. If the US or Singapore or Japan, are where they are today, its not because their people are smarter than us. It’s a simple issue, the rule of the law. We blame politicians for indulging in vote bank politics, and changing laws as per their whim and fancy. But why do they do so, because they know that there is a large class of people who support their actions. We always keep trying to get around the rules and regulations. We are the ones who jump queues at airports, use our contacts to get things done, break all procedures. And this is a disease persistent with all classes, but to be honest it’s the most with the rich classes. The bad rich man is not a Bollywood myth, it’s a reality in India. The richer and more powerful you are the more you think that you are above the law. Forget about being a superpower, we can’t be a decent nation, if people think that they can violate the law and get away with this. Let’s make it very clear, any person in India, has to follow the law, irrespective of race, nationality, gender, class, we can’t afford to tinker the laws for a privileged few. I know this is a pet issue of mine, and I will deal with it in detail in a separate article. One more issue which irks me no end, is the way we treat the lesser people than us. The handicapped, the elderly, women and children are treated in the most shabby manner, and for a country which prides itself on it’s human values, this is the most shocking. Forget about providing special facilities for the handicapped or the disabled people, my question is do we even treat them as human beings. Sadly, the answer is no, a vast majority of us don’t. We think the handicapped or disabled people are meant to be either abused or made fun of or pushed around. And sadly this attitude is more prevalent in the educated sections of society. I have often stated that our education only aims at turning us into doctor’s, MBA’s, engineers or clerks, but not into better human beings. The lesser said about the way we treat our children are better, girl children are meant to be disposed of, or else we make our kids toil in homes and sweatshops. We need to have pride in our country, and by pride I don’t mean the chest thumping, flag waving, chauvinism which we display. When I say of pride, it means treating every part of the country as your own. You are a part of this nation, its like your home. Yet we defile the country in ways we wouldn’t do to our own home. We spit, litter on roads, and think nothing of dumping rubbish near some one’s home. I have often seen people driving in posh cars, opening the windows, and spitting on roads, or throwing out rubbish from their cars. And the way we scribble on ancient monuments, forts, or defile them makes me sick. Is this the way we respect our heritage? Can’t people think of a better way to declare their love for some one, rather than scribbling it on walls? As a nation we are defined by heritage, it’s our identity, and we seem hell bent on killing that identity. One more thing, which disgusts me no end, is the way we behave with people coming from abroad. If they happen to be black, we exhibit racism towards them, and if they happen to be white, we behave like school kids before them. Yes and if she happens to be a female, who is white or maybe Chinese, I don’t even want to talk about our behavior with them. It makes me ask one question, don’t we have any self respect? Are we such a pathetic people, that we feel, our life is not worth it, unless a white skinned foreigner talks to us? Why do we try to run down our country and people in front of foreigners? Come on, we are not such a loser nation, have pride in your country and have some self respect. Behave like a human being, have a backbone. Even slaves have more pride than some of our fellow citizens. We can build better roads, have better infrastructure, maybe one day we will be the richest nation on earth, maybe we will be a super power. But unless we Indians evolve as human beings, we can never lat claim to being a civilization. The points I mentioned are matters of serious concern, and unless we are serious about them, we can never hope to be a progressive nation. Only when we improve on some of the above issues, then can I say India really Shines.
